Hi Everyone and an observation

Nice board you've got here.

I'm an old rock/metalhead (well, I'm 38) and I hadn't listened to Purple for years - literally - until this morning when I bought on impulse "MADE IN JAPAN 2000
Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan - April 1, 2000". ***

Jesus. Awful. Sounded like a crap band down my local pub.

Most of my CDs are in storage so I've just gone out and bought Made In Japan. Wheh. That's better.

*** have I missed something/the point....or is this a true nadir?

cheers

Ah, welcome Jack ! hope you participate and enjoy yourself !!

It´s a bootleg !! i´m not sure if it´s crowd recording, but if it´s not it´s something like that !! emoticon i recommend you get the Perihelion DVD or the Total Abandon DVD to get some fine recente performances of the band ! If you don´t like it there ok , you win emoticon but please don´t judge the band from what you heard on a dodgy sounding bootleg emoticon

Rock On

Cool. Fair point. In my rush I thought when I bought it it was a band apporved release.

What is Perfect Strangers like? I saw it in HMV for £13. Worth a spin?

£13?

Quite expensive, but worth it!

Made In Japan 2000 was a part of the official bootleg releases from a few years back, so if your copy has the Thames/Thompson label on it the money is going to the band. However, it is sourced from an audience recording and I agree it's not the best way to get a sense of the current band live. The Total Abandon CD and Live At The Olympia 96 CD are also good places to check out the Steve Morse era if you don't want to go the DVD route.

Perfect Strangers is a great album, and I definitely recommend it. From the reunion era, I personally prefer Purpendicular, Bananas, and Rapture of the Deep but you can't go wrong with Perfect Strangers. The title track alone is worth it, but Knocking At Your Back Door, Under The Gun, A Gypsy's Kiss, and Nobody's Home are great tunes. Most people love Wasted Sunsets as well (I just think it's okay). The 10 minute version of Son of Alerik on the remastered edition is very cool too.

Well i don´t like it that much, it´s ok, but IMO the best Purple album since 1974 is 1996´s Purpendicular emoticon

Play.com do the very same album for £8.99 delivered. I would say that is worth a spin, leap and somersault. emoticon
