Re: Gillan - peaking at 60 in terms of expression?

Just to add a thought/opinion or two to this little digression -

1) Every time Blackmore plays a plugged in Fender Strat while performing with Blackmore's Night and they perform tracks from Deep Purple and/or Rainbow, it's a sham/sell out to a noticeable degree. Whether she wants to or not, Candice Night attempting such things as "Child In Time" - by the way, basically an Ian Gillan/ Jon Lord composition - is completely ludicrous...sorta like me entering and honestly expecting to win the Miss Universe Pageant against even a field of below average looking contestants.
In my non-humble opinion, of course of course.

2) The impression(s) I get regarding the 'anti-unplugged' brigade regarding Deep Purple doing such an album are that if Deep Purple was one of the first bands to do such an album and if it was done while Blackmore was with Deep Purple, it'd be touted as one of, if not the greatest musical statements of all time. But, because other artists had mucho success doing it first, Purple shouldn't as then they'd look like they were 'trend chasing'. Well, Purple started out as 'trend chasers' and have only very rarely ever been 'trend setters', in my view. This is not a negative thing in my opinion, as it never lessened my love for (or belief that it was the best rock music ever written, played & recorded by anyone, anytime, anywhere) Deep Purple's music by an iota. Though it may not be most of the 'anti unplugged' brigade's sentiment, I get a strong aroma of sour grapes...
One thing about a "Deep Purple Unplugged" album - for the longest time, as a matter of fact 'til recently, my thought was that Blackmore may not have been the best guitarist to perform on it, had it been done say, back in the early-to-mid '90s (or even earlier than that). Steve Morse would've fitted the bill nearly perfectly at the time, though. Now, after almost a decade of constantly (for the most part) playing/practicing 'acoustic style' playing, I think Blackmore would deliver a stellar performance should it be decided a minute from now for such a project to be undertaken.

I much prefer Ian's singing in Purple, i.e. actual singing with expression, emotion, and thoughtful phrasing.

For me the Gillan's Inn is a bit of "look at me I can still sing this". The version of WABMC was well over sung and he sounded nowhere near as good as he does on Rapture.

Depends what you want from Ian and Purple I suppose. Do you want them to go screaming and yelping through old age trying to recreate In Rock (and from my time on this forum is seems that is indeed what most of you want), or do you want the band to progress and make interesting and challenging music (my preference and something the band have done on ROTD).

So yes I agree Gillan is hitting somewhat of a creative peak at present, but not by re-singing his old songs for a solo release, but rather through the top notch lyrics, vocal melodies and phrasing evidenced on ROTD.
