Gillan - peaking at 60 in terms of expression?

I was just listening to IG's interview with Bruce Dickinson on BBC and they played a couple of samples from Ian's upcoming solo album Gillan's Inn, due out early next year. You can listen to the interview online. Listen to IG's vocals on WABMC. Emotional or what? I was also happily surprised with how good he sounded singing old Gillan tunes (Unchain your Brain).

Of course, he lacks the range he once had as well as the youthfulness of early days, but I was still very happy with these clips. Looking forward to the album.

Did anyone else catch the interview?

Daniel

The streaming didn't work at all and I'm quite unnerved. I'll try again tomorrow. How long did it last? Can you summarize what's been said? Thanks.

Nothing new in the interview. The good thing: the promising sound clips!

I think all the Gillan quotes are taken from the ROTD bonus interview cd.

Having not heard the clips myself, and after reading your post I probably won't, but I must ask, what is the point of this CD if he hasn't got the youthfulness or range that he had when the songs were first released? Sounds to me like breathing second hand smoke.
Is this another comparison of how good someone elses granny was able to boink at 20, but just to show off how she can still boink now at 90, only not nearly as good, but at least she won't pass out type of thing, yet she feels the need to prove it. I think I'll pass on granny and Granpa Gillan.

Why did TMIB record SelfPortrait with Candy? The vocal delivery by Candy was a million times weaker as the original.
The song is very boring (due to the vocals).
The same goes for other DP or Rainbow songs sung by Candy live.

I did not like the idea either, when I first heard about it. Now I've heard some clips, and must say I've changed my mind. Hearing Satriani play Unchain your Brain... a new, and great version of Blin Man, with Lord and Jeff Healey, is just two reasons. And Gillan sings amazingly good. I wonder why he does not push himself this hard on the new Purple albums. Maybe cause he needs to think about the live situation, with months of touring...

Yes, Gillan sings amazingly well here. More emotion than I've heard from anyone else in a long, long time...

So you think an acoustic version of Self Portrait would sound good with Ronnie shouting over it? I've seen many times on this forum a wish for DP to do one of those stupid bloody albums where bands just imitate thier music with acoustic instruments. Not much change to structure or any thought given to what it will sound like as long as the diehard buys it.
Blackmore's Night hasn't been, nor has Ritchie ever been a proponent of such nonsense. Ritchie did SP because when he changed it to acoustic, the composition changed as well and the only recognizable part of the song is the lyrics, but not the delivery and they have turned it into a completely different tune. In the realm of BN, the song is just fine. When a band like BN decides to totally re-arrange a tune it should be taken for what it's worth on it's own merit. When a band like DP, or Gillan for that matter since this is the topic of the post, decides to re-do..say SOTW or Highway Star, and he just does it with musicians who are going to play it the same way, then it loses it's merit.
I just got the Castles & Dreams DVD and love the way they re-do CIT. Rather than the backup singers try to imitate Gillan on the last screams of the verses and bring it up another octave, Ritchie has the band play the staccato bridge that leads into his solo while the Sisters of the Moon stay in the same octave which is still very effective and exciting. Ritchie changes things to fit the atmosphere, as with Self portrait, while Gillan is still hoping to retread the same ground and looking to indulge his own self doubts by bringing in, what's he thinking, new and improved players? Bring in Jon Lord to play on a track? He's been asleep since 93. It's basically Gillans attempt to play a Tribute to himself like all of these lame tribute albums. He does enough Blackmore Tribute on tour so I guess it's time for him to turn the tide and make it look like it's his turn.
RUBBISH

You don't get it.

The idea was to make SP sound more fragile, not heavier. The same goes for the live tracks.

But you'd probably prefer CN sounding more ballsy than Gillan, Coverdale or Dio.
