Coverdale On M3

"I was with DEEP PURPLE for three years. I wrote the majority of the music while I was there. But that doesn't give me the 'right' to call myself, or my band, DEEP PURPLE...

"I thought they were called THE COMPANY OF SNAKES... THE SNAKES… M3???

"It isn't anything to do with their 'right' to play WHITESNAKE music. Anybody, and I mean ANYBODY, has that same right. They just can't call themselves WHITESNAKE, and they are fully aware of that. It is the fact that they promote themselves as 'WHITESNAKE' which makes it confusing to many people.

"My former colleagues are very aware of the situation. I started the band, and I put the players together. Also I came up with the name WHITESNAKE, REGISTERED the name, so, in fact, I do actually own the name WHITESNAKE.

" 'We' didn't start the band together as a 'band'. The band was originally put together by me to promote my solo career after DEEP PURPLE. I am entitled to the name and the band identity I created, and as long as I am not featured in any particular musical line-up comprising of former members of WHITESNAKE, whoever it is will not be entitled to call themselves WHITESNAKE. It's as simple as that."

I thought the whole point was that they didn't want to call themselves Whitesnake anyway, that's why they named the band M3?! emoticon In any case Coverdale shouldn't fret, it isn't like they're selling out the NEC or something taking the audiences away from him.

Re: Coverdale On M3

I believe there have been times when shows have been promoted as "a night of Whitesnake music" or some such thing.

My guess is that Coverdale is bothered by how the band has been promoted at various times in years past, not the actual name(s) they use.

I would appreciate it, though, if Coverdale (and all other musicians for that matter) stop with the "confusing to many people" argument. I'd like to think music fans are pretty smart and no one needs Coverdale to clarify what's going on.

Re: Coverdale On M3

to be brutaly honest, if you know the smallest bit about whitesnake, then you will know that is coverdale.
as much as those of us on here love the classic era, if you are going to see m3, then you know you are going to get the back bone of the classic line up, doing the early era stuff.
it seems cov is having a paddy for no reason.
there will have been a lot of folks at the monsters tour thinking that the band started in 1987.
if they all thought m3 were whitesnake why are they not doing the nec and other such venues?
unless i missed it, i dont recall ritchie having a pop at bonnet/airey when they toured the down to earth album a couple of years ago!
oh and for what its worth, i like the name company of snakes and i think its much better than being named after a motorway (.....now thinking will anyone take the bait emoticon)

Yeah, I thought Company Of Snakes was a better name too, they should have stuck with it IMO.
