i really like solitare too, but i think this is the one they can't do live because of Gillan's duel vocal.
did anyone ever hear doing it tonight live, was it any good?

I thought it worked just as well as any of the )))s songs, but for some reason it did not
stay in the set for very long, but it certainly went down well, and then sunk...shame.

So - I don't see a big problem. They don't have to copy (what they don't anyway) any studio version in detail.Improvisation is the magic word.
An "Aviator" live version with Steve on acoustic guitar, guided by Don on keyboards for example?

I´m not completly sure but I think they already did it acoustic on occasion, though most of the time they did it a bit like Led Zeppelin when they played the Rain Song(clean guitar playing the acoustic guitar parts).

I also don´t think that Solitaire would translate well to the stage(even if I´d love to hear an extended organ solo on that) it´s a bit like those songs on House Of Blue Light that lived so much on the studio sound that when they were performed live they didn´t sound as good anymore(The Unwritten Law).

Well in this case, the vocals of "Solitaire" are based on "double tracking" what IG used to do sometimes. The song would might appear in a different light if they do it live, which for me is no guarantee that if would suck then, because Solitaire doesn't only live from its vocals.
There are some Rainbow/DPsongs for example, which studio-wise have double Ritchie guitar tracks (pretending there are 2 guitars,rhythm/lead) and got later performed live on stage. It almost never did these songs any harm ,when performed on stage.
Talking about improvisation - well Don might add some singin' through some lines or you use some effects...what tells you that only the studio version would be the only tasty one?
I'm aware of "Bad Attitude" on NP,the track became a bit empty here and there but it's also up to the musicians to maybe put a more constant lead-line in.
They (DP) are professionals, perhaps it's a matter of motivation too...

Another good example springs to mind - I think it's much harder to perform studio BN stuff on stage in a familiar and filling way than a hard rock song ,overall supported by only electronic driven instruments.
