Four, to be exact. 'Highway Star', 'Smoke', 'Space Truckin'' and 'Woman From Tokyo'. They probably should play 'Hush' and maybe 'Kentucky Woman', making it six. This gives you all of the songs that are known by the general public, which constitutes most of the attendees of their concerts looking for a bit of hard rock nostalgia. You can throw in songs from most other albums as you go along. They need to rotate different songs in and out of the set list. There are a lot of great songs that are in their catalog. All that they have to do is to keep away from songs that IG has too much trouble singing these days, like CIT. Either way, keep the core songs and mix and match the newer stuff with some of the older tunes. This will keep the more informed fans happy while keeping the more casual listeners interested.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (JSA)Sun, 12 Jun 2005 17:30:36 +0000 Re: Same setlist againhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51330,from=rss#post51330https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51330,from=rss#post51330For me one of the best tracks ever : Flight On The Rat, I can't understand why guys never will play this number alive. HS sang by Turner is not something I would recommand to someone to discover DP on stage but it was different from Gillans performances Now, since 96, what is different in HS ? Nothing. I'm fed up of the classics played by the current line-up (ie current guitarist !) Enough of SOTW, HS, SK, Lazy, Black Night ! I understand they don't play for die-hard fans but for everybody, and people expect classics but what was the need of a complete MH on stage ? Did they really believe most of their audience knew Maybe I'm a Leo or Never Before ? People didn't know more Never Before than The Battle Rages On by exemple. I don't care if they play Into the fire, Mary Long ar anything from In ROck to WDWTWA, they have played nearly every songs from these records since 96...but almost none from the 80s records and it is a shame !! I don't like Maybe I'm a Leo, it's a boring song (though, pleasant to play)and I'd love to hear Solitaire or Nasty Piece of Work on stage That's also why I'm enthousiastic about GIllan's Inn project. Nothing new here to say the least, but maybe is there the promise of a tour and the possibility hear him sing something radically different from his Purple stuff nondisclosed_email@example.com (ptitilian)Fri, 10 Jun 2005 20:07:42 +0000 Re: Same setlist againhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51328,from=rss#post51328https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51328,from=rss#post51328quote:douros wrote:  About what "surprise" means...  When you see a mark II or III live video (unfortunately I haven't found mark I)the surprise element is there even if you know the setlist.  For me it was there in the first years of Steve's in DP.But the last years, and especially after Jon's departure DP seem to have become more flat than ever... It hasn´t to much to do with that. they´ve been playing the same crap for the last 7 years. Listen to the boots. Whenever did anyone do something challaging during a solo? Whenever did they challange each other? There is absolutely no surprises. No matter what tune, you already know Morse´s single solo. The only one he´s able to pull off. No news only the same rehashed shit. Listen to Speed King anno 2001. Half the solo spots are an exact replica of what they did in ´93. Sure they also did do safe stuff in the seventies. I´ve never cared about the vocal/guitar duel in SKOW. It was pretty crappy most of the time. And god damn awfull all the time since 1972. Of course you´re entitled not to agree with my opinions, they just happen to be my personal opinion, and a major reason why I won´t buy anything DP, tickets or CD´s, never mind, they are not worth the money. I am not in a situation, where I think that Airey/Gillan/Glover/Morse/Paice retirement fonds are more important than my own, and when I buy music _or_ a ticket for a show, I want full value for my money, and not listening to an alcoholic singer, with a guitarist who doesn´t care a bit, together with a hired hand on the keys, and a bass-player who has been semi-retired ever since '73. I thoght I mentioned Paice´s money grabbing attitude, but then again, I wont. It´s a fact that Paice only cares about the money and not the music. Everybody half close in the circles knows that, I just say it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mrsnip)Thu, 26 May 2005 18:42:58 +0000 Re: Same setlist againhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51323,from=rss#post51323https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51323,from=rss#post51323again i disagree mr snip in the mk2 golden years, the voice/guitar duel on SKOW was always the same thing and melodies ! in the old days they also had planned stuff and repeated stuff ... i just think that nowadys we know what they done last gig , so it´s hard to surprise someone , if someone keeps away from the info on the net they´ll be fine Rock On João nondisclosed_email@example.com (JohnnyLucas)Thu, 26 May 2005 18:25:51 +0000 Re: Same setlist againhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51322,from=rss#post51322https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51322,from=rss#post51322quote:JohnnyLucas wrote: quote:douros wrote:  It is not a matter of long jams I think. Before Jon Lords departure DP's setlist was very flexible and changing from night to night. When Don first came (due to Jon's illness at that time) they continued the tour having a standard setlist. Then they had the excuse that Don was very new to the band.  But the problem is not only the songs.I find that they play them in the same way too. It is a pity cause DP fans are used to some real improvisation (playing a song which is supposed to last 4 minutes and nod to the other guys in the band and keep it for another 10 minutes).nondisclosed_email@example.com (douros)Sun, 22 May 2005 13:11:58 +0000 Re: Same setlist againhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51313,from=rss#post51313https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p51313,from=rss#post51313quote:Ridder wrote: Can't understand why they play same setlist again ( from Aug. 2003 to the last show in Norway 20/5 2005) okay little bit diff. in USA "Machine Head tour" but in all not much news not even a live version of a old track.
