The Yardbirds Guitarists vs The Purple Axemen

If you could choose who's got the better guitarists, it's really a tough one.

ERIC CLAPTON, JEFF BECK & JIMMY PAGE

----------versus---------

RITCHIE BLACKMORE, TOMMY BOLIN, STEVE MORSE & JOE SATRIANI

The Yardbirds axemen are more popular and recognized around the world. Most rock critics and writers are praising their contributions to rock music.

The Purple guitarists are less popular than the Yardbirds axemen, but ALL Purple guitarist are "Guitar Virtousos", all of 'em are masters of their instruments.

Of the three Yardbirds, Jeff Beck is the best technical player, he is a guitar virtouso. Eric Clapton is perhaps the only singer here, he also plays with emotions.

Jimmy Page is a good songwriter, he writes classic rock anthems and also charismatic, but...Page is not a guitar virtouso, he is an ordinary hard rock guitarist, don't get me wrong I'm a big Zeppelin fan, but that is what I believe as far as my ears is concern, Morse is better than Page technically, his only advantage is that he is a real hard rock guitarist.

So who do I think wins this battle???

Well...until now, I have NO idea, I don't know, it's tough.

Maybe Ed can answer this. emoticon

If you count all Purple guitarists up to Morse you should also count ALL Yardbirds guitarists up to Gypie Mayo! Why do you leave him out?

I can hazard a guess as to which set of guitarists you probably will select, Randy - but I'll stick to just picking which set I think wins this 'shoot-out'. emoticon Of course, I may change the 'line-ups' around a little...
In the interests of Fairness, I'm gonna eliminate Joe Satriani from the 'competition'...Satriani played for both teams at one point! (Deep Purple 1993/94 Tour, "Birdland" lp for the Yradbirds, 2003). So, I'm left with Clapton, Beck + Page vs. Blackmore, Bolin + Morse...hmmm...Blackmore rules the roost over all of 'em, no doubt in my mind...Page is/was also a superlative player/creator...EC is, well, EC...Beck - when he wanted to be - was one of the finest guitarists, ever! Trouble with Beck was that he was as unfocused as Cross-Eyed Mary...Bolin probably compares to Beck in terms of musical interests/variety - if one is overly interested in that sort of thing...Morse is great, but there's just something lacking with him - for me...so, my verdict is -

The Yardbirds, on points....definitely not a KO. The combination of Clapton + Page carries the day for the Yardbirds' team of six string riff-slingers.
