GNR have probably caused more headlines than DP the last 15 years or so.
so they are probably more "important" or "greater" or whatever...
The "Purple legend"...well there isn't much to talk about. They are classic band that did Smoke on the Water and Black Night. They had a reunion 20 years ago that caused some attention. Since then very little has been written or covered. Nobody knows who is in the band now, or if they even exist.
GNR on the other hand...
(and yes Appetite is a classic album)

In my eyes, the answer is a clear "NEVER".

Except in Russia and some Eastern European countries, where they are among the most popular acts if the Wall Street Journal is correct.

Where and what is Guns and Roses nowaday? At least Deep Purple still draws semi descent crowds and puts out new albums.

How long has Gun and Roses suppose to have out a new album? Guns and Roses are in reality the Axle Rose Band. And as long as Axle refuses to deal with his issues, G & R is a vapor band.

Anyone here like Velvet Revolver? The band that has Slash in it. One of the better modern music acts around.

I was making a subtle joke, but I hadn't time to write a proper post and explain it further.
anyway, the point I was trying to make was that we're living in a world that is being ruled by the media.
if you are on TV, then you exist. if you're not on TV then you don't exist.

GNR doesn't have to make new albums or sell out stadiums in Siberia -people are aware of them as a band even if they don't really exist anymore.
Purple on the other hand is a hard working band that releases albums, DVDs and tours constantly, yet people are unsure about them.

then we have this whole phenomenon with "polls" and "lists"...

more or less sold out tours of scandinavia, the uk and germany to mention a few isn't bad for the band without important members like blackmore and lord... and my guess is that the catalouge is selling good.

you forgot to include US on that list of sold out tours, as their shows still sell very well here.

Re: GN'R is greater than DP ?!?

The question is tougher to answer than I would've thought. I guess it all depends on what definition/sub-definition of 'greater' one chooses to use...
If by 'greater', anyone really means 'better', than the answer is simple - in my non-humble opinion - definitely NOT. Deep Purple is the 'better' band.
If by 'greater', anyone means 'more popular/better known' - then I have to go with Goons 'n Hosers emoticon (old joke that I chose not to resist! emoticon ) Let me be clear about this - I thought their debut was one of the better albums to emerge from a veritable 'wasteland' of - what I considered, and still do - sound-a-like bands that for the most part weren't producing music (or what I consider 'listenable' music) but senseless noise made for the sake of making senseless noise...I know I'll probably get some 'stick' for this, but 'bands' like Anthrax, Metallica + Megadeath spring immediately to mind to illustrate my example of 'senseless noise'... and believe it or not, I don't feel entirely good inside by labeling that type of music as such, as I remember older (anywhere from 5 years to 20 years older) people than myself labeling my favorites (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Grand Funk, Led Zeppelin, The James Gang, Uriah Heep, etc.,etc.) from back in the late 60s through the late 70s as exacly the same thing - 'senseless noise' emoticon ...ah well, generation gap revisited - what goes around, comes around, I guess! emoticon

Re: GN'R is greater than DP ?!?

with all due respect...

G n'R is for pu..ies

we ain't any

1. The critics are just for the time being (time of GnR's actual axistance). Maybe GnR was better in the late 80ies and early 90ies then DP at the same time time.

1. What i think that they (those who spread words of criticism over the world and in doing so disappoint this beautifull group of DP's fans) should make a fair comperation and take into consideration, let's say, first 5 or 6 years of each and then give a reasonable statemnt.

DP would win in any way.

3. Some time they base their critics on the votes of the young people who do not know and never new anything of DP from early times. at that time November Rain, Child of Mine, Jungle, Don't Cry... was al they knew. to be honest, i was one of them but i realised the truth right in time

DP won, wins, and will be...

who ever states oppesite mey be suddeanly "eaten" by the dark....

(sorry for the spelling mistakes)
