No, its not the legendary Deep Purple but it is a Deep Purple than can whip the butts of most other rock bands around today.

Nope, todays "Deep Purple" has nothing to do with Deep Purple! Nothing at all. They are a Gillan-Morse thingy where the rest just takes a ride. They haven´t created anything worthwhile since Purpendicular, and ought to retire before they end up in the pub/club acts. Mainly, they blew it.

I second MrSnip's opinion on today's DP.

Before someone throws a tantrum, let me state clearly (what is implied in Snip's post) that I don't question the current line-up's right to exist. Yes, it is a legitime Deep Purple.

As for the topic's question, how can it be when two finest rock instrumental soloists of all time have left?

I don´t agree with Rezi and Mr.Snip emoticon I agree with Crazyfrog, it´s not that Deep Purple of the early 70´s, but the 80´s proved that even with Richie and Jon, they never could be the same Deep Purple again, i think that the Morse line ups are the best since the reunion, and Purpendicular the 2nd best album ever. The current Deep Purple still is one of the best bands around, it can be a Morse / Gillan thing (i think Glover has more input to the songs ... the riffs alone are of no use if a good songwritter doesen´t puts them where they belong), but what´s wronf with that ? Both are great at what they do ... so the main thing here is : I´m glad there´s this Deep Purple instead of a not so great MK2 or no Deep Purple at all !!

Rock On

a) A pretty damn good band that doesn't any longer have Ritchie Blackmore playing guitar or Jon Lord playing keyboards in it.

b) No.

c) Yes, it's 'something else' - if by 'something else', you mean something other than the Legendary Deep Purple at it's Peak - it's a pretty damn good band that has 3 of the 5 musicians in it's line-up that also made up 3/5ths of the legendary Deep Purple MkII's line-up.

d) What exactly would you like my non-humble opinion about? The 'Best' movie Dracula? The 'Best' James Bond? The Greatest Hockey Player of All Time? The 'Best' Flavored Ice Cream? The Greatest Heavyweight Boxer of All Time? The 'Best' Guitarist of All Time? The 'Best' Bassist of All Time? 'Best NFL Quaterback of All Time? 'Best' Drummer? 'Best' Keyboardist? 'Best' Actress of All Time? Greatest Baseball Pitcher of All Time? Greatest NFL Running Back? 'Best' Way to Cook A Steak? Greatest/Best Porn Actress of All Time? Worst State in The U.S. to Reside In or Hail From? Scariest Movie Monster/Creature of All Time? What?!? * emoticon

* The answers are, of course, :

Christopher Lee
Sean Connery (w/Timothy Dalton a close 2nd! )
Bobby Orr
Butterscotch Blast
Muhammad Ali
Ritchie Blackmore
James Jamerson
Brett Favre
Carl Palmer/Cozy Powell
Jon Lord
Betty Davis
Roger Clemens
Jim Brown
Medium Rare to Medium Well
Vanessa Del Rio
Arkansas
The Alien

The current line-up of DP is great. They have solid concerts and their last album (Bananas) is one of my all-time favorite DP cds. Morse and Airey bring their own talents to the band and as far as I'm concerned the band sounds as good as it ever did.

There are a few albums (Stormbringer, THoBL, S&M and TBRO) that clearly shows that having both Blackmore and Lord in the band is no guarantee for classic, hard rocking Purple music. (Bananas rocks harder than any of the above)

The current lineup is not the band that once did MIJ,
but they are still a good band that deliver a solid performance in concert -which can't be said about the reunion Purple (mkIIb, and mkIIc)

If they "blew it", it didn't happen the moment Blackmore stepped out, or the moment Lord left.

Nope, it happened in 1998->1999, and the death stroke was Lords departure.

Todays "Deep Purple" delivers the "goods" on a consistance base I agree, but I do not agree that the goods are that good. Of course Morse has talent is a great guitarist, I never doubted that, but he is too damn boring for a Hard Rock outfit. Not his stage antics, but his playing. It might be brilliant, but not quite the right way.
