Yes, "Smooth Dancer" is about Ritchie. And of course Blackmore knew it was about him. He replied to Gillan 17 years later in the song "King Of Dreams".

"I'm a real SMOOTH DANCER", I'm a fantasy man

Master Of illusion, magic touch in my hand

All the stages are empty when I steal the scenes

A beggar of love, second hand hero, King of Dreams"

WOW I had never thought of those lyrics as an answer. Brilliant!!!!

I'm sure that was JLSqueelers lyric, as he probably knows the words and story to Smooth Dancer better than RB would. I'm quite sure the backlash lyric also went over Ritchies head. So now Gillan and JLS can be pissed at RB.

That continiuing references to Ritchie Blackmore still abound 11 years after he left tell me that Blackmore carried much more weight in DP than maybe Mr. Gillan and Co. care to admit

I don't think any of Gillan, Glover, Lord or Paice have ever tried to deny that Blackmore carried a considerable 'weight' while a member of Deep Purple. As far as I know, it's just the specifics of the 'weight' (5 pounds? 6 pounds? 7 pounds?) that get debated.
I know it's one of the oldest sayings that's been applied to DP (especially DP MkII), but I still feel it'll always be quite relevant - "Deep Purple (MkII) together was certainly greater than the sum of it's individual parts".

But nobody else has been out of DP for 11 years except you count the time in where there was no DP.
You can't compare. emoticon
