Blackmore Night's Success/Popularity

I apologize if this post appears crass but how successful is Ritchie's Blackmore's Night in relation to his past projects groups like Deep Purple/Rainbow?

I know he has a series of shows in Southern California area & probably other cities. Do lots of people go to their shows or is it mainly die hard fans of the Blackmore and/or the music?

In a nutshell...

In comparison to DP and Rainbow, BN isn't very popular at all. The venues they play are mostly castle courtyards in Germany and very small theatres everywhere else so a crowd of more than about 2-3000 is rare. Their record sales are respectable in Germany and Japan at least, (the last album got to #11 in the German charts), but I don't think they even chart anywhere else.

The majority of the crowds are loyal RB fans but there's a smaller amount that are into the whole thing.

I'd say it's a well chosen crowd of fans who're allowed to take part in the first row! emoticon

Here in Italy they're well known
from people who know who is Ritchie
but most of them don't like BN.
They never charted, maybe with their
new romantic collection they could sell better.
Surely their popularity is growing.

That is a statement that is true worldwide.

On DP italian fan forum they're
smashed everyday from most of
DP fan but I have to say that
many BN song are fine, mostly because
Ritchie has a very good taste playing
guitar, not for the blonde one. emoticon

Re: Blackmore Night's Success/Popularity

They've struggled to sell out even small venues in the UK and we're talking small ie < 1,200 seater theatres, some even smaller. I've seen them many times and each time it's been to a less than full house expect one where there were 300 people. They messed up the show and finished it after only 1:15mins, they just vanished without even a word, apparently Candice was ill. That escapade told me they aren't worth travelling for because if it suits them they'll just say "f*ck the audience who've paid fotrunes travelling to see us" and just cancel the gig. They also did the same in Edinburgh in the UK at 4hours notice!! There were people whop flown in from all over the place for the gig. It was basically typical Ritchie, but really jsut shows what a complete arseh*le he's become. So don't waste your money travelling, they might not even bother to play.

It's unfortunate, but I think even the last variant of Rainbow didn't exactly set the heather alight either in terms of attendance at gigs worldwide. You'd expect Ritchie to be a huge draw, but in reality he isn't anymore. A lot of the dedicated fans travel round all the shows in Germany and the UK, they must enjoy spending their money or they do it as a holiday.

Ritchie is still a great player and well worth seeing, but these days you cant be sure that buying a ticket for one of their shows guarantees you anything, doesn't even mean they'll bother to play it.

The german shows are usually all sold out.

But you´re right, you never know if he´ll stop early, or just cancel the gig at short or no notice without reason.

BUT there are also those 2 1/2 shows with lots of encores where everyone can leave satisfied(unfortuantly those are in the minority).

Yes ! I've been at a couple where they have gone on for ages with Ritchie playing the Strat a lot and they've been very very good indeed. He IS worth seeing. However when you can't be sure they will definately play you'd be mad to book flights and accomodation months ahead in expectation, because they just don't always deliver. Sad but true. Yes, excuses can be made for them, they were ill etc, but the bottom line is they DONT take their responsibility to their fans in any way seriously at all, indeed quite the opposite, Their attitude is simple enough and it's definately "f*ck you lot" we don't care. If they did care AT ALL then the nonsense that went on in the UK last year with Workington and Edinburgh just wouldn't have happened and certainly it wouldn't have gone without comment from BN as it did. At the end of the day most of their fans are mature people, so they can accept when "things go wrong" if they get an explanation for "what went wrong". BN didn't provide one. It really couldn't get much more juvenille, amazing when you think Ritchie is in his late 50's ! LIke Jon Lord said of the Water throwing incident "He was just like a .....little boy" !!
