Not really surprised that Plant, Page and Bonham won their categories, but John Paul Jones beating Entwistle and Squire?

What do you expect of Polls who´s authors write sentences like: Zeppelin's classic 1971 hit Stairway to Heaven was recently named the nation's favourite rock song of all time recently. ? emoticon

I can see why things turned out this way. Whenever you put out a popularity contest like this, the Zepsters will always be at or near the top. That goes as individuals or as a group. I am sure that things would be slightly different if you polled musicians only.

The "rankings" that I don't get are where Paice, Gillan and Blackers stand. These results are typical poll BS.

Slash is better than Blackmore? He is good, but nowhere close.

Gillan below Coverdale? Blah! I can see how Mercury got ahead of Gillan. He was an incredible showman in his prime, although Gillan was a better singer. He was never a great stage presence like Mercury. Paul Rodgers is a stretch. Not exactly a great performer. A little boring and a little full of himself. What do you expect from a list that has Stevie Nicks ahead of Roger Daltry and Bono any place near the top 100, let alone #10? Where is Greg Lake? He is way better than most of these guys.

Paice should be up in the top two or three. He is better than Powell or Collins, who were/are both top notch players. He is at least the equal of Bonham, with a lot more variety and lot less bombast, which is probably why Bonham will always be rated better in popularity polls. Peart is great, but I find him distracting at times. A lot of what he does is basically unnecessary. At great showman? Sure. A great time keeper, not as much. Dave Grohl in the top ten? There are plenty of worthy players that are much better. Eric Carr is a pretty good player, though. Kiss should have kept him around.

I won't get into bassists other than to remark on the fact that JPJ isn't anywhere close to Entwistle or Squire. Also, where is Greg Lake in this mess? He was always considered one of the best, if not the best bassist in rock.

Either way, you have to consider these performers in their prime. If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't have a bunch of dead guys and wasted drug addicts dominating this poll.

I'd say Plant was a better showman than Gillan, but I don't think there's a lot between them.

Blackmore's better than Page, but doesn't get the same level of coverage, some of his best work is on tracks you never hear on radio.

John Paul Jones is easily better than Glover. Roger doesn't really deserve to be top 10.

Paicey is FAR better than Bonham. Ian got a far bigger sound by being fast, Bonham just wacked the kit bloody hard, which actually gives a far leass 'heavy' sound.

I think they would have, if he hadn't died from cancer back in 1991....

Sorry, Wasp, you are correct. I really wasn't thinking about that. Doh!

My observation still stands. This poll is dominated by dead guys and drug addicts and a few excessive boozers. Nothing wrong with that, except that there are quite a few that deserve to be way up there that aren't.

'scuse me, please. I did NEVER EVER hear any technical complicated rhythms from Ian, like Bonham did for example on "Four Sticks", "Black Dog", or "Kashmir". Of course his style was very hard, but that wasn't all.

His drumming in the verses of Burn, during the studio version of The Mule and Mandrake Root is far more complicated than those. Kashmir is easy to play the rest is studio effects. Bonham did a lot with effects even live.

Now what was the name of that drummer again who can play melodies is beyond 60 but still drums better than ever now? He´d deserve that number one slot, not Bonham.

I'd add You Fool No One to that list, far better than Kashmir et al.
