Ere's a bit of year-end fun for ya

So in the year of lockdown, I've had the time to listen to a lot of studio albums that I rarely play (in some cases for many, many years) rather than playlists. As a result, I have a challenge for you. You are asked to select 10 studio albums (not live, compilations or greatest hits) and in their original format*; i.e. not with demo versions, live performances, outtakes, instrumental versions etc. Let's say they are your Desert Island 10.

Now here's the thing, these have to be albums where you like every track or if a track doesn't necessarily stand up in its own right, it works within the context of the album. So no fillers or stinkers which can mar "great' albums - think The White Album or anything by Lez Zep IMHO. So the key here is that less is more in that there's a higher chance of a dodgy track on a 12 track LP than a 7 track LP. You must be honest with your self and if you want to take the four MKII Purple albums, that's fine! I, however, have chosen 10 different artists in case I don't get rescued. As usual, it's the discussion and not just a list that we're after.

Black Sabbath - (1973) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (8)
Strengths: Great riffs and melodies
Weakness: Who Are You? is on the cusp of filler but might be saved by its prog rock flavour

Thin Lizzy - (1980) Chinatown (8)
Strengths: The driving energy of the first five tracks
Weakness: Some might argue it's a bit samey
Near Miss: (1979) Black Rose

Santana - (1971) Santana III (8)
Strengths: Variety, their best line up and spine-chilling guitar solos
Weakness: Probably needs to be played on a balmy summer evening and not one for the dark recesses of winter

Rush - (1980) Permanent Waves (8)
Strengths: Very consistent and great riffs
Weakness: Most individual tracks don't quite reach the highs of their classics on the albums that came before

David Bowie - (1972) The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust (9)
Strengths: Great songs, Mick Ronson at his best
Weakness: Hang On To Yourself is on the cusp of filler

UFO - (1981) The Wild, Willing & Innocent (9)
Strengths: Great rock, great riffs, great vocals
Weakness: None, I expect I would have given it a 10 if Shenker had been with the band
Near Miss: (1976) No Heavy Petting which might have made the cut of it wasn't for the stinker A Fool in Love

The Rolling Stones - (1969) Let it Bleed (9)
Strengths: Dirty, gritty rock & country
Weakness: The bass and the sax prevent Live With Me from tipping into filler which it could easily do
Near Miss: (1968) Beggars Banquet - Factory Girl is filler to me

Genesis - (1973) Selling England By The Pound (9)
Strengths: A beautiful album
Weakness: I'm not a big fan of The Battle of Epping Forest but it has enough variety not to want to skip

Deep Purple - (1972) Machine Head (10)
Strengths: Everything you need in hard rock
Weakness: None
*Note I'm including When A Blind Man Cries on my disc as it was a travesty to exclude it in the first place

The Beatles - (1967) Magical Mystery Tour (10)
Strengths: Where do I begin, how about pyschedelic rock at its best?
Weakness: None
Near Miss: (1970) Let It be (Naked) which beats the Spector version but doesn't quite have the uniqueness of MMT

And finally, three other albums that just missed the overall cut; Blondie (1978) Parallel Lines, Pink Floyd (1977) Animals and The Scorpions (1979) Lovedrive, although if it wasn't for the absolute stinker of Suspender Love from (1978) Taken By Force, I think this might have edged in rather than Rush.

I won't go into as much detail but my picks are:

Deep Purple Third Album-To me, this is the album where DP started to hit their groove.

Fireball-Brilliant album. I can't see what RB doesn't like about it.

Tony Ashton and Jon Lord First of the Big Bands-a fun album with no bad tracks at all.

In Rock-Brilliant Album.

ELO Eldorado-To me, their finest album.

Machine Head-Fantastic Album.

Blondie Eat to the Beat-To me, their best album.

Gillan Mr. Universe-A kick ass album.

Myron Floren Dance Little Bird-A Great Accordion player mostly seen on the Lawrence Welk Show.

Badfinger Straight Up-One of the most underrated bands of all time and a classic album.

Hey doggone, thanks for your response, good stuff!

I love Deep Purple (the 3rd) - I must confess I didn't listen to it this year but will do now.

I haven't heard Ashton/Lord, hadn't heard of Myron Floren and only know Come & Get It from Badfinger so some research to do there!

I'm glad that you listed Blondie because it's kinda easy for classic rock fans to dismiss them.

No worries re two MKII albums - I actually think that Purp fans might include 3 (or even 4).

A New World Record was in my near miss section but there are a couple of tracks that I sort of skip and I was being honest to myself.

Now where are my favourite posters; Big J, mcpurple, lightintheblack?
