Why does Gillan sound amazing on Toolbox (1991)?

Why did Gillan sound amazing on toolbox but not as good before and after? Someone asked him along with another question on his website but he only answered the other question but I was wondering even before I saw that. Anyone else?

Because he is an amazing singer and sometimes he sings amazingly, I think.
If you mean the several high screams, I think there could be some studio technical wizardry at work on Toolbox but in those years he sang great also live, maybe not as controlled and precise but full of emotion, intention and intensity.

You can listen to some of his live stuff from back then on YouTube. He sounds really good. He got his voice in better shape and avoided that 'overdrive style' that isn't so good for his chords. It didn't last, though. I just think that he cant' keep away from doing the things that hurt his voice. It's taken a Hell of a toll over the years, unfortunately. emoticon

I think being Ian Gillan in a Gillan band suits him with songs that were made for him, I also think being the singer in DP put a huge weight around his shoulders trying to live up to the octave jumping giant he was 69-73, I think both Gillan and Blackmore suffered the most living up to their former selves. After hearing the energy of Toolbox , TBRO was a let down.

Blacker's problem was that he was trying to be something that he's not. He saw all these new guys, like EVH, and it just wasn't his style. For whatever reason, he seemed to think that is what the fans wanted. Instead, we just wanted Ritchie to be Ritchie. Gillan, on the other hand, kept wanting to be MKIIa Gillan. He was hurting his voice during Gillan and then did major damage during the ill-advised Sabbath stint. I really wish that he had taken plenty of time off to rest his voice and get it back in shape. I think that the reunion would have been much better and lasted for a long time had he done that and Blackers would have just been Blackers. emoticon

Maybe there was something else wrong, who knows. His lifestyle, drinking, smoking?
With MKIIa Gillan had a lot of time to rest his voice. With songs like The Mule, Lazy and Space Trucking there were a lot of moments where no singer on stage was needed.
With Gillan he had a lot more stuff to sing.

You are correct here. Similar to what I have mentioned. During 'Gillan', he was beating his voice up and it continued, AMA, with Sabbath. After that, he just couldn't keep up with the rigors of touring with DP. When he got the ax, I think that it was a wake-up call and he got his voice back in fairly decent shape. There are some good vids of the Toolbox tour on YouTube and also with that Greek artist. Unfortunately, his voice didn't hold up. I still attribute it to going out on that voice killing stint with Sabbath, instead of resting his voice as he was supposed to do. The allure of touring worldwide with big act was just too much and he paid for it. He just was never the same. emoticon
