Rainbow setlists could be more flexible?
I‘d like to know know your opinions!
I think RB can be a bit more creative and play some different stuff from his wonderful colourful back catalogue.
Instead of Black Night and Smoke why not playing Self Portrait, Sail away, Stormbringer, Pictures of home, ...?
Although I am not a big fan of the current DP, but I like that they play(ed) Hard loving Man, Fools, Into the Fire and some more tunes with that special kind of „underground feel“.

Re: Rainbow setlists could be more flexible?
I would love it as well, but the situation is different: DP has toured massively and needed to keep things fresh whilst doing over 100 gigs per year, Ritchie is doing 3-5 shows each year and they become events where the greatest hits are front and center because if he would not play them a lot of people would complain.Plus, Ritchie has never been adventurous in terms of set list...the improvisation stuff is played within the songs, but the selection is fairly stable.

Re:
Pictures will never be played by RB live. He probably doesn’t want to learn it or just doesn’t like it. Hasn’t played it yet.

Re:
a) mtb7 is right. It's simply not enough shows to talk about setlist flexibility.
b) For me, the main problem of the recent Rainbow shows wasn't which songs they played, but how they played them.
c) No Pictures Of Home, please. For me, the this is one of the most boring DP songs ever, and it's "enough" that Ian Gillan's Touring Circus have played it approx. 100.000.000 times.

Re:
If Richie had to incorporate some new songs into future Rainbow shows I think he might go for stuff he had done with BsN, like "Ariel", or maybe "Self Portrait". He might also choose some stuff from "Bent Out of Shape". He really liked that album. However, my personal choice would be "The Cut Runs Deep". I really love that number.

I agree..there are lots of different stuff he could have played.
While Blackmore seem to be a guy who likes a fixed setlist (and then just have a song or two that can be included if he is in the right mood) and the band doesn't rehearse so much it's understandable that the shows are fairly similar since it's just a handful of gigs they do.
However, each year they might have done a different setlist. Sure, some people would complain if certain songs were dropped, but there are so many good songs he could replace them with that I don't think it would be a problem, and people are complaining anyway.
