Love it! To my ears, not a bad track on it. The band sounded fresh and exciting. Te follow up, Abandon, was damn good also. The live shows with this line up were, to me, were the last great Purple tours. After Jon left, the live shows went slightly downhill.
I saw DP on this tour at Leicester in a small theatre and they were so good. Lots of new songs, old songs I had never heard before, a really good show.
You are correct that once JL left nothing has ever been the same.
The Abandon tour was the last truly great DP tour for me.
Never saw the tour, but hate the album. Nothing I like about it at all.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
I also never really liked Abandon. Too many (in my eyes failed) attempts to insert some metal elements (was thinking of writing clichés) into the songs.
I saw a few concerts on the very long tour and have to say that the quality was pretty volatile. I remember Stuttgart as very good, but was disappointed by Aalen (or was it Ulm?) and some open air shows like Mosbach or Heidenheim.
I preferred and still prefer Purpendicular by far; even Bananas I like more

Re:
That was also my impression listening at the time to Adandon - a very late (and not extremely successul) attempt at reinventing themselves as a sort of a metal band. Not that I had or have anything against metal, quite the contrary. But it seemed a bit artificial with DP. Glad to read I was not the only one sensing that.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
Still my favorite Morse-powered album of Deep Purple. It's 10 out of 10 for me and as of now I have 4 copies of "Purpendicular" that's 2 CDs and 2 Vinyl LP.

I agree here. It is probably my favorite of the Morse-era DP. I think that Rapture and Bananas are probably better albums, but something about the newness of having Morse in the band and Gillan sounding much better made the band sound fresh. Very nice.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
Purpendicular is a great album. I loved it when it came and still love it. It's like an explosion of musical love in a liberated band.
With nothing of the limitations of past.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
Great album
Me dont like the Aviator en cringe often when I hear SFLS
Bought the Japanese edition when it turned up in a local 2ndhand store called De Plaatboef in Rotterdam. I was told someone sold his collection because he needed the money for a trip
Japs were expensive so 25 Guilders at that time were my option.
Great album but they should have left it at that, replace Morse.
I agree Abandon was a dissappointment, except for some fragments and maybe a song or 2.I never came around to it but wanted to add 7th Heaven to a sampler of Purpendicular and Abandon
Suggested something many years ago but no one saw the logic behind it.
Although I /got get annoyed/depressed when I hear(d) Morse do solo's I really fancied the idea of a 3 double disc consisting of Morse/Lord era songs played on stage.
So escpescially the tracks of MK2 never or seldomly live played/recorded : Fools, POH. WABC, Bloodsucker, etc plus The Morse era tracks played live and maybe only a few classics like HS and Lazy.
Somehow people dont think it will sell.

I thought that Morse was great when playing with JL. The old rarely played songs also sounded great live, the problem is IG hasn't been able to sing HS, SKOW, ST etc etc since the 70's. People would have gotten behind new songs, and old tracks from the 70's that were not on MIJ, as a setlist. Continually dragging the same set around the world for close on 20 years has killed the excitement that SM brought back to the band.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
Glad so many other people like it! I can't stop listening and feel that with better marketing it could have made a bugger impression in the mid 90s. Feels like a lot of rock fans didn't even know the band existed then.
Where should I go next with the Morse era - Abandon, Bananas or Rapture? I am not really a completist and don't want to be disappointed, but I really love the three Morse era albums I now have.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular
I would go for Rapture, some really great songs there. It's a bit uneven though and the production is strange. But some really great songs IMHO.
