Finally got Purpendicular

Finally picked this up yesterday and although I already knew a couple of songs (Ted the Mechanic and Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming) from live DVDs, the majority of it was new to me. First impressions - wow! Sounds so fresh, fun and varied. Think it's going to turn into one of my favourites from the band.

What do you think of it, and what was the reception for it like amongst Purple fans and the media when it first came out?

I remember buying it on release day in February 1996 (and rebuying a few months later in Paris when I found the Canadian version had the extra cut Don't hold your breath). Well, I thought the production was fresh and lively compared to the sterile sound of Battle rages on. The playing was of course top notch. But the songwriting was maybe a bit too all over the place, like if they were trying whatever idea they came up with, with no clear direction in mind. That is probably actually the spirit of the album but I thought some ideas worked better than others: Cascades, Soon forgotten, Loosen my strings, Somebody stole my guitar, I loved; Rosa's Cantina, The aviator, Sometimes I feel like screaming, left me a bit unimpressed. From this point of view, I find the last two albums way more focused.
I remember also the inevitable comparisons with Stranger in us all, that came out just a few months earlier, and feeling the opposite about it: a collection of good/great songs played by a mediocre band while Purpendicular was a collection of mediocre/good songs played by the best band in the world.
My impressions, in these last 23 years, have changed a bit but not much.

A good enough album, loads of new ideas from SM. In my opinion it suffers with putting too many ideas and every song they recorded on the album. If they had trimmed the mediocre stuff and released a 45-50 minute album it would be much stronger.
But refreshing after TBRO.

I picked it up the month it came out and didn'the know what to think at first. But over time, after repeated listens, I realized that this was the Purple album I wished they had made since the reunion. It still sounds so energetic and adventurous to this very day, and I think it's the best one since FIREBALL. There is not one bit of filler on it to my ears with every song being another great part of the ride. No album released by the band after this one can even compare.

At the time it was new and fresh and different, a very good rock album. Some of it i really liked ,some of it though was kinda dull and i actually prefer most of the Abandon album to some of Purpendicular.A best tracks between the two would have been fine emoticon In retrospect though the new freshness has become the same old same old ie the solos that SM laid down have been repeated over and over on every subsequent album since.

Love it! To my ears, not a bad track on it. The band sounded fresh and exciting. Te follow up, Abandon, was damn good also. The live shows with this line up were, to me, were the last great Purple tours. After Jon left, the live shows went slightly downhill.

I saw DP on this tour at Leicester in a small theatre and they were so good. Lots of new songs, old songs I had never heard before, a really good show.
You are correct that once JL left nothing has ever been the same.

I like the album. Excellent tunes. As one writer said, they found a way to make Gillan sound like Gillan again. Certainly not with all of the vocal acrobatics, but basically just right. I didn't like 'Soon Forgotten' at first, but it grew on me. Interesting shifts in time signatures and a cool sound. This goes not just for SF, but for the rest of the tunes, which really made the whole album sound new and fresh. I think that it was a bit less mind-numbing than Abandon, but others think differently. It starts off hot and just keeps going. My favorite tunes are Touch Away and The Aviator, but the rest are quite fine, also.

Either way, an excellent album with Gillan sounding good. Very nice, indeed.

Re: Finally got Purpendicular

I was in the Navy and deployed aboard a ship when this came out. Every morning I would have to hunt down the person who had borrowed my CD of Purpendicular. It was one of the favorite CD's of the young people deployed with me. If the record company had gotten their act together and done a proper release in the USA along with radio airtime I believe it would have bee a hit. Instead, when I got home from deployment, I couldn't even find this CD in the music stores. I did find many copies of "Come Hell or Highwater" though.

The Abandon tour was the last truly great DP tour for me.
