Corrected. I've never seen him outside Purple so slipped my mind emoticon

Did we have many chances to see him outside DP in Europe since he joined DP? A friend of mine saw him in a small club in Hamburg in 1984, but I don't know how often he played Germany with other acts than DP during the last decades.

Anyone on here see the band play with Roger Glover's replacement Nick Fyffe? Think there were two separate legs of tours (in 2011 and 2013?) when he subbed for Roger.

Also, someone said Satriani shouldn't count as a member - does that mean he should be in the same category as Fyffe (or other temporary live fill ins like Randy California) as 'hired hands'?

Re:

If Satriani had just done the six Japan Dec 1993 shows as an ad-hoc replacement for Mr Blackmore, I'd say yes, he's in the same category as Fyffe. But he did the complete summer 1994 tour with them, therefore he counts as a band member for me. Unlike Fyffe or others, he did many more shows than it would have been necessary to help the band fulfilling their contracts.

But as they didn't do an album with him, I understand those who don't count him as a band member. Although there were much longer periods in the band's history in which they didn't do albums.

Mk Satriani is officially MKVI. I'm not sure who decided that and on what it's based on, but that's the way it seems to be.
Probably because they did a full tour together ( or at least the full second leg of the tour), and it was much talked about in the press, where Glover 's replacement was barely noticed and publicied, not to mention Randy California's participation.

Afaik the Mk I to VIII counting has mainly been established by the Deep Purple Appreciation Society. Maybe it was invented by someone else (a journalist perhaps), but the DPAS preserved it over the years, including the decision that the Satriani lineup is "officially" being considered as Mk VI.

When Satch came in, it wasn't sure that he would leave the band without doing an album. That decision came later, in 1994. Whereas in the cases of California and Fyffe it was clear from the beginning that they wouldn't participate in doing an album. For me this is one more reason to count Satch as a band member.

I've heard a couple different stories over the years as to why he couldn't stay...the most believable one came down to record company politics. The other I had heard was that his management didn't want it which I find hard to believe since it was his management that called him and urged him to do it.

I did. And yes, I don't see Satriani as a member of Deep Purple. Maybe the band does, and you should point this question to them really.
As I see it, the currrent lineup is mk VII.
Some say mk IIb, what is that? Can only be one mk II..

This is down to everyone's taste. Some people don't consider the JLT lineup being DP, so they may refuse to give any "Mk xy" label to that lineup.

Imho it makes sense to have a consensus about that to make sure that everybody knows what is meant with "Mk VI" or whatever. And in this case I find it reasonable to follow the numbering defined by the DPAS. If everyone defines his own numbering, we just get chaos. I'm not a throughout fan of the DPAS (I stopped subscribing to the magazine when I had enough of Robinson's Blackmore bashing), but here I'm willing to accept them as the leading instance.

But JLT did record with Purple and he was indeed a member of the band, no matter what we think of mk V.
Satriani on the other hand never recorded with the band and only came in to save a difficult situation. Seems to me it was never intended for him to be a permanent member.
So when Steve joined, mk VI was born. All of this IMHO.
