Glasgow

Laurence Jones was an excellent support choice. Beautiful guitar tone and playing, very good supporting musicians, excellent songs. I'll definitely make a point of catching him again.

GH and band played very well, went down a storm, couldn't really fault them (drummer apart), but the gig didn't really live up to my probably unrealistic expectations.

Glenn's last gig in Glasgow in January 2017 was my gig of the year by some distance. Playing a great mix of material with an excellent band to a very small crowd (Sabbath and Tyketto were also in Glasgow that night) they played out of their skins. It was simply superb.

So why was last Friday's gig not likely to be top of my gigs of 2018? It felt a bit too rehearsed to me from the stagewear (Soren in all black, Jay Boe in denim shirt and jeans a la Jon/California Jam) to the song intros (Soren mimicking Ritchie's noisy barrage prefacing Mistreated). I know that's the point of the tour but it just felt too staged.

I would probably have enjoyed it a bit more if I wasn't continually distracted by the new drummer's timekeeping. A lot of songs ended up finishing at a markedly quicker tempo than they started, Smoke especially. I know they've had problems in the drum department and the latest guy was drafted in at very short notice, but to me they're still a drummer short of being a brilliant band.

I would like to know why Glenn stopped to perform with this guy:

By far the best drummer Glenn worked with in recent years… especially for Purple stuff.

Agreed. He was the real deal and would have made all the difference.

This is quite impressive actually. Good timing and accurate representation of the original drum part.
