Chas Hodges RIP

Chas Hodges of Chas and Dave fame and who also played with Richie Blackmore in The Outlaws as well as being a well respected session musician has died. He replaced Roger Glover on bass for an encore at an early 70s gig for Deep Purple. Anyone know any details of this, what songs he played on and if there are any recordings or footage of it? RIP Chas.

BBC news, in tribute last night, showed the film clip of the Outlaws playing Law & Order from Live It Up in 1963. So Ritchie was shown dancing on the BBC!

I believe it was more than an encore, more like a short tour until Glover could come back, or one leg of a tour, something like that.

From the Chris Charlesworth Deep Purple book published in 1983

"..[about Purple's first headlining UK tour] The only sour note was a mysterious illness which affected Roger Glover. At several of the shows Roger was in so much pain that he was unable to return to the stage to play an encore. Cjas Hodges, Ritchie's old friend from pre-purple days who now played with Heads, Hands & Feet, often played bass for a full tilt version of Little Richard's 'Lucille'"

Chas himself confirmed it was only once, in Aberdeen in March 71.

I have the Charlesworth book and it has a number of inaccuracies so I treat it with caution.

Good point. I'd add that Chas was a prodigious drinker so his memory might not be spot on.

One of a very exclusive club of Purple live stand ins with Randy California, Christopher Cross and Michael Bradford on guitar and Nick Fyffe on bass. No others as far as I'm aware!

Interesting - when was that? Always thought that Paice had played every concert.

For a soundcheck? For an encore?
