Revisiting Abandon
Sat down the other day while my wife was working, and pulled Abandon off the shelf. I admit to having a soft spot for this album, as it was the album where I realized DP was still a viable entity. I had lost track of the band for some years, until hearing this playing in a music store (back when they actually existed). I knew immediately who it was, and bought it right there.
That said, I still really like this album. Yes, there are a few weak tracks in the second half, but what really struck me is that this is by far the heaviest album they have done with Steve. There has been a lot of good music on the others, but this just seems to be the heaviest rock. And I like it.
I know people have various opinions on this one, but I was just reminded how much I liked it. The '98 tour for this was also the first DP show I ever got to attend, and it was fantastic. Still one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

Of the 12 songs, there's only 3 I don't like; Jack Ruby, She Was and Evil Louie. Of those, I can still live with She Was. Had they left those three songs off, it would've been a truly killer album.

double vinyl album, gatefold, pressed on purple colored-vinyl.
Listening while looking at the album artwork and gatefold.

Those are in fact the songs I consider weak as well. Everything else is great.

The middle section of She Was with guitar and organ interplay on top of a groovy bass line, is fantastic in my opinion. I like the main start-and-stop riff too.
Evil Louie has that mean sound that I also like, with the guitar and organ playing in unison - which is very characteristic of the record in general.
Jack Ruby is the only number that I feel should have been left off the record. If it wasn't good enough in HOBL days, how come it got better 10 years later?

Indeed those songs are weaker, especially because they're all grouped together. It's kind of one slow track after another. Otherwise the first half of the album is one of the strongest made by Mk Morse.
The 1998 tour was the best I've seen from the Mk Morse, except maybe for the Concerto at the Albert Hall, but that's another beast all together.
In 98-99, their playing and alchemy was just fantastic.

Whatsername, She Was and Evil Louie are pedestrian fillers IMHO. The rest of the album is fairly decent, although the production doesn't do it any favours.

It's not the best, but.......................
It's their 16th studio album, I cannot complete my vinyl collection without "Abandon", I can never have a good Purple collection without it in vinyl.
Love it or hate it, if you don't have it, something is missing.
Bad or good Purple studio album, as a fan I got to have it, I gotta have at least two copies of each studio albums, but that's just me. Others will throw away what they think is a bad DP album, but not me.
Every studio albums bad or good, in physical media (CD, vinyl, cassette, etc) is a treasure for me, but that's just me.
