What is it, that makes Roadhouse blues a fovourite of so many musicians? Turner did it, Deep Purple did it, Nick Simper did it with the Nasty Habits.
Its a super fun, easy song to jam and what's better than proclaiming "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer!"?
I get myself a beer in the morning when I'm dreadful hangover..
It helps big time.

That list is really interesting, and it is surprising that JLT of all the ex members has done so many DP songs live, despite hardly appearing on any of them.
Not surprising at all. These guys know what the crowd wants.

And the award for worst ever version of Smoke On The Water goes to..... DEEP PURPLE MK3. Split vocals by two singers with no interest in the song, a repeated first verse and as a special bonus a GH yelping fit. There are somethings even a beautiful California sunset cannot hide.
They mangled every MKII tune that they ever did. It didn't get any better with MKIV. Ironic 'number' for that Mark. MKIII used to start Smoke with 'They' for the first verse, as Coverdale and Hughes had nothing to do with it, but on the repeat of the verse, it devolved into 'We'. I never liked MKIII or IV. Coverdale and Hughes were just terrible live and just killed DP for me. Much better on their own.
I must however admit that the eastern tones that RB slots into the climax of the guitar solo in Cali Jam are absolutely precious.

Ritchie, Lord and Paice carried Purple until Ritchie left and then the drug-addled duo sent the group on a downward spiral that Paice, Lord and even Coverdale couldn't prevent or stop. Terrible.
