As Purple's signature song and as a band with so many spin off acts, this must be the song in rock history with most versions by bands connected with the original. Certainly can't think of any other.

But which bands/solo acts did it best and worst?

We have at least all the versions of the band Mark 2 onwards, plus as far as I can see:

Rainbow (only with Dio?)

No, not with Dio. With Turner, White and Romero. About Bonnet I don't know.

Must have been confusing it with Dio's version of Mistreated.

Has Don Airey done it with his band in his own solo shows as well?

Very easy to answer this question:
The best one - by far - is the original studio version (remastered).

The worst I know is - by far - that one from 'Last Concert in Japan'.

One of the weakest versions is that from Evans' bogus DP in Mexico in 1980.

I like it. It is kind of fun. A lounge singer version. Not offensive by any means. Either way, Pat sings better than Gillan these days, for whatever that is worth. emoticon

Joe Lynn Turner solo as well as live with Glenn Hughes. Neither on the original so what is it about this song that makes it so important for Deep Purple's offshoot acts to inherit it?

Which other songs DP songs have been performed by the offshoot bands or members solo?

At least they tried. I can't stand Candice singing DP songs, except for Soldier Of Fortune. And even that is sung miles better by Ronnie Romero.
