RB Riffs

I still find there are riffs of his I hadn’t been playing correctly.

Examples might be…….

• Verses of Not responsible, Em chord with added ‘A’ note on G string in the chord
• Love’s no friend, Talk about love and Nobody’s home, a twiddle on
• Burn, to sound correct the diads need to be picked directly over the bridge pick up.

From some time back,

• Spotlight kid, as with Smoke on the water, a bass note on the bottom E string need to be played as a ‘pedal’ tone between the diads
• Firedance/The Battle Rages On the D down tuning is a slight red herring in that the main riff does not require this, only the linking riffs within the solo section.

finally, the arpeggio at the end of the Child in time solo, the notes are obvious but the execution less so..... I simply can't play this convincingly. nor could the man himself during the reunion years!

Anyone have any others?

I can vouch for this having recorded my own version of it. It's a very tough piece to play with clarity. When I was recording that version I purposely set the tempo of the solo section to what I knew I could manage with those arpeggios coming up at the end. If I'd set it any faster I would have had to edit the arpeggios together to get the precision on the recording and that would have been cheating. emoticon

And another thing I won't discuss is RRRRRRRRRapture...
...It always causes fights!

ha, yeah I can imagine. Is very tough…I’ve seen a guy on YT do it solely on the B and E strings, which isn’t any easier really.

The pace they played it on the 84/93 dates was insane and of course RB couldn’t execute that part well.
He does it perfectly on the Rainbow reunion however with the slower tempo.
