I don't think his bitterness is easy to understand at all? This was after the most successful years of his career, he was by then presumably fairly well off financialy ?ie a multi millionaire ,sure he must have felt a bit pissed at the Sabbath guys for the Ozzfest fiasco but why so bitter towards Blackers after all those years? And yet despite the bitterness he wanted to reform with Ritchie?Just think that footage does him no favours, he comes across as an angry bitter selfish wee man, which by all accounts wasnt the truth.?
It was not a successful time. It wasn't just the Ozzfest fiasco. He had problems with more or less everyone, on a personal level. The Dehumanizer album didn't sell nearly as well as the early 80s Sabbath albums and Iommi said they lost millions on it. Then he struggled with his own band in the 90s and I believe he lost a lot of money. There are rumors he approached Ritchie for a reunion when he heard Ritchie had left DP, but Ritchie chose to put a new band together with more or less unknown musicians and that pissed him off. Still he had a door open for several more years...
Let me see then?
1.Dio released a bloody awful album with Sabbath which unsurprisingly didn't sell well
2.The Sabbath members agreed to the Ozzfest thing
3.Dio the band weren't doing too well (they were generic metal by then IMHO)
4.Ritchie didn't want to reunite after leaving DP so putting that all together that made Ritchie Blackmore an asshole and all the classic Dio era Rainbow albums (apart from the first one)sh1t??
now have i got it?

Re:
I thought Dehumanizer was a strong record, I still do. Computer God, After All, Letters From Earth, I. Those songs held up with tracks from H&H and Mob Rules when they reformed as Heaven And Hell.

Re: Dio Disciples to release album
I found Dehumanizer disappointing to say the least ,apart from a few tracks it was dull and plodding in comparison to both H&H and MR which were great albums.
Better The Devil was quite simply poor.
All of which of course is Ritchie Blackmores fault

Didn't like Better The Devil at all. Played Dehumanizer at the gym this morning, still liked it.

Re:
Is it called something different in Europe? In the U.S. its called The Devil You Know. But aside from Fear and Bible Black (which I thought was an instant classic), I agree, the rest is weak.

Re:
I'm frankly surprised by the hate for Dehumanizer! It's easily a top 3 Sabbath album in my book, the songwriting, performances and production are all top notch. Dio and Iommi especially are firing on all cylinders like they had something to prove. I'm still amazed by it every time I listen to it. Absolutely essential Dio/Sabbath, each track is a classic. Also the lyrics were Dio at his most inspired, I could go on and on. I would place it above Mob Rules, and just under H&H.
I have to agree though with The Devil You Know though, that one sounds plodding and dull. Was quite disappointed with it when it came out, and hoped it would grow on me but it never did.

Me too, I was quite surprised. I listen to it now and it still holds up production-wise as well...sounds like it could have been recorded this year!

To me it was a disappointment at the time.I was delighted to hear RJD was working with Sabbath again, but maybe i expected too much after the wonderful H&H and MR ?
For me Dehumanizer had only a few great tracks ,namely
Computer God,After All,and I ,the rest were a bit generic ie a mix of ok and filler IMHO
Yes RJD sang superbly, and Tony played great ,but for me a lot of the material just wasn't up there with their earlier collaborations.
