Mr Blackmore seems either somewhat drunk or he's bit out of it there. It's very hard to tell from the videos, but he has a kind of vacant look, like you often see in dementia sufferers, in some of the clips he clearly is just forgetting what stuff to play in some places, I think in SOTW either he forgets he's supposed to solo and then gets to it, after looking at the singer like he's forgotten to sing, maybe he did forget to sing but all seems pretty odd and rough at the edges

In other parts he plays the usual solo patterns he's been doing from about 10 year or so in BN pretty well.

The audience seem happy and well into it, so on that measure it's a successful night for all concerned! This is probbaly as good as they are going to get now I suspect. So If people enjoy it that's great, why not, it's not going to get better.

There is certainly something wrong with him - the band sounds better, the show as a whole works better, even the guitar sound is improved, but there is a degree of sloppiness and a clear reluctance to solo, which means he's fully aware of not being at the top of his game. You see it in the omission of CTR, and in the setlist being built all around greatest hits. I took the time to clock two solos to confirm my suspicion:

MIR 1: Smoke 58 seconds, Mistreated 1:33
MIR 2: Smoke 53 seconds, Mistreated 3:48
Moscow: Smoke 39 seconds, Mistreated 1:24

And when he does solo, it's far from his (even current) technical level.

It seems to me that his concentration/focus is off.

In my opinion, though, this is nothing more than one of his Mennonite days ("we are IN this world, but not OF this world") - in the past, he used to throw tantrums, nowadays he disappears - how often have I read reviews over the last ten+ years of BN gigs saying "RB was so low in the mix we hardly heard him, he did not pull out the Strat and hardly soloed".
It could be related to a health issue (maybe even something minor) that bothers him on and off - I have a nerve in my shoulder that sometimes is a big nuisance and causes major headaches, but I do not have a concert in front of 15K people in my calendar, so I can just shrug it off. And I'm a good quarter of a century younger than him.
There may be many of these little things that don't cause a cancellation, but make him go onstage in a difficult situation.

Of course, if you do it on a BN concert, you can more easily hide than with a Rainbow one; people have come to 1. hear RB, 2 hear the songs, and a distant 3. hear the rest of the band.

Calm down. It was just the first show. Let's see what the next shows will be like. The first show of a tour is always a bit tricky.

let's see what the next 4 gigs bring.
But I do agree that he seems to be a bit lost/not that interested.

Stefan72 - I tend to agree, it's not the end of the world, the show overall seems to have been good and he's always had ups and downs, but the downside of current-age internet is that we get to scrutinize every second of every gig, and it was apparent to me that something was not working properly, that's all.

I am far from being desperate about it, on the contrary I am looking forward to the Prague gig.

It is what it is at this point!

what I would love to know is how much actual rehearsal RB has done. There's no way around the fact that little rehearsals means that he doesn't care that much about the end result.

regardless; I'm still positive about this. I'd rather see this than BN to be honest.

It's safe to assume that Moscow wasn't recorded (filmed at least) judging from the pictures?

I keep my fingers crossed for a blu ray recorded in Berlin or Prauge!

This ^

He says in the interview posted in the other thread that he doesn't like flights over seven hours because he has back issues and the long flights aggravate it. I don't know how long of a flight it is from where they were staying in Germany to Moscow but surely its a lengthy flight from NY to Germany. As someone who has back issues (and had neck surgery), I can attest to being sore after sitting for so long.

There were nights (when I played in bands) that were excruciating because I had a bad back day and my playing that night definitely reflected [sign in to see URL] a Catch-22; do you go on with the show knowing you're not even close to 100% or do you cancel every time instead? You can only cancel so many times before you stopped getting booked.
