Re: 18 month "plays Classic Purple" tour

GH uses a different guitarplayer for different continents?

I dont like Kollman too much, prefer the others.

As far as writingcredits concerned i understood that he was left off the first time around when BURn was released but that has been corrected when the anniversaryedition was released.

I really love GH s vocals when he is in comtrol, but he will NEVER listen to that opniion which is a shame because it would make him acceptable for a much bigger audience.

Referring to play me is out is dumb when you try to make a point. He made many more albums on which he totally rocks and rules, dont know where to begin or end.

On many soloalbums he made from 94 on he also does not overindulge as much into what people from all over the board find annoying, so no reason to not check them out.

Joe Bonamassa joined Glenn for 2 songs at Electric Ballroom (London) - Mistreated and Highway Star.

Sydney 2017 is still the highlight.

Re:

I saw Glenn's show in Hamburg yesterday and really injoyed it.

And he enjoyed it himself a lot as well. He smiled often, was very thankfully towards the audience and performed the songs as heartful as ever. His voice is still in stunning shape. Of course the high screams aren't as long as they were in the 1970's, but that isn't surprising considering that the guy is 67 years old now.

I always liked the way he does the vocal lines which had originally been sung by David Coverdale, but meanwhile he is even able to do Mk II stuff - they did Smoke and Highway Star - in a way that doesn't embarrass me. Miles better than how he did it in Mk III / IV days.

His announcements weren't as annoying as I had expected. Of course he told something about Tommy Bolin and this and that, but it didn't spoil the show. And for me Tommy simply deserves being mentioned. He was part of great songs like Gettin' Tighter and You Keep On Moving.

Glenn's mates did a decent performance to my ears, especially the keyboard guy. Good vocal work from them. I didn't find the drummer as weak as Big J found him at Glasgow - perhaps he was better yesterday, perhaps I'm not so sensitive about the timekeeping issue as Big J is.

Highlight for me was Sail Away, one of my favourite Mk III tracks. Too bad that they didn't do it live in those days.

The audience was quite enthusiastic and supportive. Hamburg has always been a good ground for that kind of music, and all the old guys with their DP t-shirts were there. I wasn't the only one with a 2016 Rainbow shirt. emoticon

Of course it was a pure nostalgia thing, they didn't play anthing except the DP classics. During the keyboard solo there were a few bars of the Perfect Strangers intro - well, that would have been a surprise! So if someone wants to see musicians exploring new grounds, that's not the right thing for them.

Myself I'm happy that I was there, and I'm happy for Glenn that he still enjoys doing these songs so much. Again it became clear how much he still identifies himself with Deep Purple although he was in for less than three years, he wasn't a member of the most legendary line-up, and it's more than 40 years ago. And for me, he doubtlessly is a bona fide member of the DP family.

How long did the show last? ~1.5 hrs or merely longer than 1hr?

RB/JL/IP became even more explosive in Mk 3. IP in particular. Plus, the rhythm section of IP and GH was a step up as well.

I personally prefer JL's straight-to-the-amp tone from MKII days. In MKIII his tone was very similar to the likes of Ken Hensley and other kb players of the time.

It was nearly two hours.

WOW!!! Bit of an unprovoked attack guys dontcha think ? 😂😂😂

No, but someone needs to speak reason with you emoticon With Ritchie out there with BN disguised as "Rainbow" and DC hiding behind his band of background singers, Glenn is about the only from the DP family still bringing it with fire and vigour. The response to "stay home" just seems odd seen in that ...light.

Really ? Wow thanks for that wonderful insight into all things dp family 👍😂
Now let me just enlighten you I am no fan if Glenn’s he has an incredible voice but is completely ott with his vocals most of the time .i mean hark back to mk3 and 4 dp he sounded like the third pig in pinky and perky much of the time and it was a blessing when he shut up and let dc [sign in to see URL] this material without dc is meaningless to me
Ps I never went to see current rainbow (if they can even be called rainbow ?)and haven’t been to see dp for many years as they are all well past thier primes and not worth the money imho

I'll agree with Light for the most part here. I never liked MKIII or MKIV because of Hughes and Coverdale. Between Glens's squalling and Cov's off-key mangling's they became barely listenable to me. Cov was sooo much better in Whitesnake and Hughes has calmed down a bit, for the most part. Maybe he'll be OK with the DP stuff. I don't mind the new Rainbow that much. Considering that Ritchie barely touched tha Strat for twenty years and has arthritis setting in, he is doing fairly well. As for the current DP, [sign in to see URL] much left in the way of excitement. Gillan's voice has been toasted for years and there is not much to talk about in the way of performance. Just the same old, same old each and every time now. Excellent playing, though, and IG does OK when he just takes it easy. I would have liked to have seen them on this tour for the last time, but I just couldn't swing it. I think that ship has sailed, never to return. At least we have great memories.

Saw Glenn in Prague yesterday. At first I would like to point out one thing - it was great gig overall - by energy, feeling, atmosphere. But...

1.) Glenn obviously had cold. It was the first time ever for me when I saw him slowly but pretty visibly losing the voice as show progressed.
2.) Prague show was long - they played for 2 hours and 10 minutes! Every song is extended and Getting Tighter and You Fool No One are almost "marathons". emoticon It´s interesting, but it brings me to a second little minus - it´s a bit less about Glenn and a bit more about band (very long five minute drum solo on GH gig? why?).

Overall I liked previous Resonate tour gig last year a bit more - surprisingly it was much more interesting to hear mixture of stuff from GH´s career (Medusa was huge highlight of the show) than set based exclusively on Purple material. And final small critical point - Smoke and Highway really remains to be IG songs. I´d rather hear other Mk3/4 song instead of that - I really dont know why This Time Around and Holy Man were dropped during the tour, maybe they thought it didnt fit the context "full rock show"... but honestly I missed them.

Agree, they should drop the mk II stuff.. and go for the mk III/IV songs.

I can understand that Glenn wants to do Highway Star and Smoke. They're DP classics, and perhaps he wants to prove that he can do these songs better than he did in Mk III and IV.

But I have to agree that I'd preferred to get This Time Around and Holy Man.
