Really? Nothing that they did as a band even came close to IR, Fireball and MH. MIJ wipes-up every live recording that MKIII ever did. DC and Hughes basically butchered MKII tunes. Every time that I listen to a live tune from MKIII, I cringe. The Big Three had all gotten better, from a soloing standpoint and the riffs were excellent, but in no way was the vocals better than MKII, nor the tunes. I liked Coverdale much better in Whitesnake and maybe towards the end of MKIV, but they still mangled MKII tunes and they were off-key plenty of times on their own tunes. They even make me look favorably on MKIIc Gillan and that ain't saying much.

So, while Blackers, IP and JL had stepped-up their game and Coverdale was much better in Whitesnake, I could have done without DC and GH in DP. The best thing that they ever did was to force Ritchie's hand and form Rainbow.

RB/JL/IP became even more explosive in Mk 3. IP in particular. Plus, the rhythm section of IP and GH was a step up as well.

MADE IN JAPAN was more "explosive" than anything Mk 3 did, and by far! Mk also had many more overall "explosive" songs, and Mk 2 was just so much more focused and tight.

Personally, I love Made in Europe. Actually listen more to MIE than MIJ these days.

I like MADE IN EUROPE, it's a good album, but it's been doctored with and some songs aren't complete. It's all about LIVE IN LONDON when it comes to Mk 3 live for me. But MADE IN JAPAN is my favorite album of all time and has so many just all-out goose bump moments. It truly captures what makes Deep Purple special, a game changer.

Blackers and JL were superb. IP was great, as always. I can't see Hughes being a step-up from Glover. RG is a damn good bass player. Hughes is a good bass player with excellent vocal chops and no control. Even today, he just can't control himself. I did like what he did on Re-Machined. Just mildly excessive here and there, but quite nice. He needs to be that way all of the time. A little ott now and then, but mostly just good vocals.

Agree about GH, he would be so much better if he was in more control. Way better.

The only reason to listen to MKIII live stuff is to hear Ritchie, JL and IP. As I said, I think that Coverdale found his chops in Whitesnake, where he was majorly improved. Hughes is a fine bass player and an excellent vocalist, but not my cup of tea. At least he kept his voice in great shape as opposed to Gillan. Now, just bring it down a notch and I'm sure that I would enjoy his stuff much better.
