50 years of dP

50 years of dP this year!

I hope they're planning on doing something special to celebrate...

Doing something with Rod Evans and Nick Simper would be appropriate. Otherwise they still have to wait a bit to celebrate 50 years.

Just got two questions....

1. When did the band use the name Deep Purple?
2. When and where is their first gig as Deep Purple?

Anybody?

First gig was April 20th 1968 in Tastrup, Denmark

The name was finally decided on that tour.

According to Wikipedia, the first Mk I album was released on July 17th, 1968 in the USA. So they surely had adapted the name "Deep Purple" at that time. A proper research via concert posters etc. would very probably lead to an earlier date. I guess Perfectly Strange is right in saying that they took the name during the tour in spring 1968.

just wonder what is left to come from the DP cannon at this point.

Would be good to mark the 50th year in some way, the one off RB gig is the only significant proposal I’ve heard.
I’m unsure what else they could do?

Well technically this year marks their 42d anniversary. The years between 76/84 they officially didnt exist. So its 50 yrs minus 8.

One big show with all surviving members would be swell but if they couldn't do it for the JL tribute, I don't see why they'd do it for anything else. Anniversaries always seem to mean a lot more to fans than they do to the bands themselves anyway.
