Dio Returns

So they've played a date 20/12 with this sad sad sad hologram thing of RJD( RIP ).

There's a review and pictures across at ]RainbowFanClan

Sounds like it was 75minutes of utter twaddle, basically another Tribute show with a Hologram appearing lifeless and less than convincing. Seems even the players looked a bit down at the mouth about it. Probably because they know it's little short of complete fraud and presumably embarrassing to say the least.

I imagine in the future we will be seeing Rainbow Returns with our man Mr Blackmore appearing as a hologram so that Candice et al can keep on earning from the legacy.

Using Holograms of dead stars surely illustrates how really poor the pool of living talent actually is that its necessary to keep these dead stars alive in this way. Pathetic overall on the part of the industry.

If this is the future of Rock entertainment......
F*ck that !@#$, you'd have to pay me plenty to go and see that sh1t.

The band have been catching a lot of flack over it on their personal Facebook pages. While I don't agree with the hologram, people have been downright merciless to them and they have my sympathy for having to deal with the fallout.

That said, I will never spend my money to see this. Wendy should be ashamed and there is no way Ronnie would agree to something like this. Sad thing is, you know Sharon Osbourne is already rubbing her hands, counting dollar signs and plotting one of these for Ozzy the second he walks off the stage for the last time.

Don't see any problem with it ??NOBODY is being forced to attend
Its been done with Elvis and other artists .If the technology is there then why not use it?
Would i attend the show? no but then i don't attend ANY tribute bands(yes including current DP touring band emoticon) ,its the real thing or nothing for me.

Re: Dio Returns

To me, there is a fundamental difference: Ronnie appears with his own image and voice for a show he had no say over. If someone covers his songs, he may not have liked it, but they are putting their own face up there. But if they show Ronnie's face, they should have his explicit permission, period!

If I was an artist, considering what's going on these days, I would request all of my unpublished stuff to be burned upon my death, and ban any use of known material apart from re-issues.

Otherwise, I might one day wind up singing in the middle of an orgy in a porn flick, just because "the technology permits it" and it's such a cool idea.

There is a lot of talk these days about violence on artists - using dead artists to take part in stuff they did not approve is, to me, an even worse form of violence.

looking at the pictures from the 20/12 show, the members of the band look pretty sheepish and worried, if not simply totally embarrased. if they had any credability as artists them it probalbly left when they took the pay cheque for this paeticualr outing. THe fans should be justifiably merciless in their outraged condemnation of this particular horror.

Ok so nobody is forced to attend that's true. However as even a small mark of respect to the legend that was DIO(rip) surely they might let him literally rest in peace rather than tring so hard to wring the last possible $$$$ 's out of his legacy. it's pathetic and shows the desperation for $$$$'s.

I think the problem is that if this even vaguely appears to be a $$$ earner here, then before long EVERY dead star will make a holographic come-back. The world and it's music and creativity surely moves forward and isn't stuck in the past with past glory's like this. It's for the same reason I can't find anything positive to say of the majority of tribute bands and shows. They are doing nothing new and nothing original, mostly they aren't even especially good at it, it's not any form of "tribute" at all, it's just parasitic and purely a $$$ earner.

I think it's little short of disgusting that Wendy Dio( or whatever she is called ) has allowed this to occur. Presumably she is also desperate to get just a few $$$'s more from it as well.

Well they sort of did it with [sign in to see URL] was his vocals and video from concerts and his band played the music live. I would have less of a problem with the whole Dio thing if they did that instead of the hologram.

IMO - it´s different thing in each case due to these reasons:

1.) EP died in 77, FM died in 91 and his last live gigs with Q happened in 86. RJD died relatively recently.... seven years ago.
2.) original Elvis In Concert (in late 90s) was something special - at that time it wasnt meant as touring event, AFAIK originally it was meant as anniversary event for 20th anniversary since his passing - they even recorded, filmed and released that show. It was Elvis´s singing voice, him on large stage video screen and at that time his original band from 70s. The original idea was getting as close as possible to his original shows from 70s. Sadly - current stuff with orchestra is absolute tasteless money grabbing machine IMO (there is absolutely ZERO connection to his shows from 70s which are used) - it´s going to happen in Prague and I´m not kidding - tickets for that show are set at similar price as last years Paul McCartney show at the same place!
In no case as QAL or EP tour, noone is trying to be "fooled" by feeling that Freddie o EP "are" on stage like with this hologram stuff - it also features the REAL stuff, real filmed material of those guys instead of digital imaginery created in some computer tool... Cant stand this "DIO returns" project actually (it would be much more honest to see a Dio Disciple band with guesting vocalists and nothing else - that hologram stuff is simply wrong) and I´m NOT fan of current EP thing either. FM´s video presence at QAL show is not a problem at all - saw that recently and it´s done in very tasteful way - noone try to "fool" your mind or senses....

I would be (and was) completely fine with Dio Disciples touring like they had previously with different singers as Last In Line did initially. Big difference here is LIL is writing new material and are currently recording their second album (I really liked the first one). So much like Black Star Riders, they went from tribute act to full blown original band. Perhaps if Purple can agree to do some shows with Ritchie in '18 they can cease to be a tribute act for a little while too emoticon

We saw the EP show with original band members in Bangkok 12 years or so ago and I was very sceptical but it was great. Agree those orchestra thing looks cheap so won't bother going.

A fried of my wife went to see Queen and AL and said it was great, but something still doesn't sit right with me.

The Dio thing looks like a joke.
