Doogie and Graham at Winter Storm Festival

I was at the Winter Storm Festival in Troon last weekend, where there was a good representation from the Deep Purple "family". Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray (Bernie's band), Graham Bonnet, Greg Smith (Tyketto, filling in for Chris Childs), Chris Glen (Gillan) and Doogie White, who rounded off the Saturday night in a one-off (?) band with Chris Glen and Paul McManus from Gun.

The final song was a very emotional version of Temple of The King.

Glen White McManus - Ariel

Graham Bonnet - Desert Song

Graham Bonnet - Since You Been Gone

The rest of the "Glen White McManus" band are Peter Higgins and Dave Cuthbert on guitars and Andy Mason on keyboards.

Seeing those clips with Doogie singing just makes me wish he'd have been asked to sing in Ritchies latest Rainbow rather than Ronnie Romero. I'm not knocking RR but Doogie would have been a helluva lot more credible.....

AFAIC. (no flack [sign in to see URL]'s just my opinion.

Yes, it would have given the project more credibility.

Yeah. I like Ronnie and enjoy his voice, but Doogie would've been a far better choice.

I agree Doogie White would have been way better suited for this version of Rainbow.

However......

Either the invitation wasn't extended....
or and more likely I suspect....
Ronnie was a lower cost member, due to his inexperience overall.

Either way.............

It didn't happen!

Re:

The only two times Ritchie decided to go back to work with a previous singer have been IG and [sign in to see URL] surprising, considering the outcomes, that he chose to go the route of a new singer;-)

The reality is that he HAD to go with either JLT or a new one - I am talking commercial reality. JLT is associated to the biggest chart success of Rainbow, and for the early Rainbow era, Dio was not available. The "problem" Doogie had, is that he stayed for too short a period, and one that will not go down in Rainbow history as successful - not because of the singer, the band or the record, but because in the mid-90 hard rock was a non-factor,and that Rainbow version, looking at it in hindsight, looks more like a transition period from DP to BN than a real attempt to re-establish Rainbow.
If you do a reunion that looks back to the past, it needs to be the most shiny and glittering part of your past, otherwise it will not fly from a marketing perspective.

Based on the commercial/marketing angle, tt’s interesting that the imagery used for the 2016/17 shows ie the Rising cover, and Ritchie saying he felt that fans would want to hear the Dio era rather than JLT, that 76-77 was probably the lowest point in terms of those considerations.

Very true. but from our vantage point, those records have stood the test of time better - I would guess the most sold Rainbow record nowadays is by far Rising. In the Eighties it was of course a different story.
