Food for thought ... :)

Hi everyone; apologies for the heavy topic but I felt I needed to put pen to paperemoticon

Opinions are just versions of the truth. Everyone has their own version, which is okay, is it not? Read about the same news event in two different newspapers and you get two versions of the truth, read the about the same event in two different countries and will find the gap gets even bigger. This forum is truly global, so we really are all coming from different places (physically and culturally)!

Sometimes our versions lie rather close to each other = agreement.

Sometimes they are opposite = disagreement.

Your own version of the truth is something, which you probably want to defend.

In between there is a grey zone = discussion.

Which, I guess is what a forum is all about? Sharing and discussing global culturally different versions and opinions about our fav. band(s).

This means that to be able to discuss (= negotiate) and share your opinion (=version), I suggest you have to actively listen to the other person's opinion. Both parties feel they are correct. What to do?

Try to exercise tolerance, empathy and sympathy for the other person's position. Try to understand it. Look in the mirror and see yourself and how you are behaving.

You cannot change anyone else but you can change yourself (if you want to). You do this by changing your attitudes, behaviour and approaches: doing this will cause a reaction in the other party. Its like smiling at someone - it is infectious and the other party will probably smile back ... unless it is a gorilla ... then I suggest you run emoticon

So, lets keep the discussions going, lets share our thoughts and have some good thought provoking posts.

Last note: English is a our common language for communicating, but it is not everyone's first language. So what may be communicated in writing may not be meant literally - i.e. expressing yourself in a foreign language is not easy ... so this has to be taken into account 2.

Sorry for the heavy (nerdy) post ...

Spot on Blackmaple!

Blackmore or Morse? At the moment Morse, but historically Blackmore.
Ahh I don't really care who is the best.. emoticon

Well it is an internet forum so it is all opinion. Music is such a personal medium that for someone to say that a certain album is the best a band have ever made, or this singer is better than this one, is ridiculous. What evidence can anyone possibly have…..sales? Well sales prove its popularity but they don’t prove quality. This has always been my argument about the RRHOF, it is a few people deciding who has made the cut which is just a personal opinion.

For example, sport is brutal in its clarity. Whatever your previous performance was, it literally means nothing the next round/game/tie. Whereas in music one album can mean an entire career no matter what the following albums are like.

The majority of issues in any forum are down to opinion and people claiming their opinion is fact. For example one poster saying that HOBL is 100% the worst DP album featuring IG means nothing to me when HOBL is one of my favourite DP albums. It may be the posters least favourite album but that is just one person who believes that, it is not a fact.

Everyone is allowed an opinion, and it doesn’t have to be the same as the next person. Don't try and change people's opinions or the forum will just die and in all honesty this is a pretty good discussion board in general.

absolutely, thank you for posting. it's the kind of arrogant, superiority and disregard for anyone else's opinion that made me glad to leave certain FB DP groups, and also block certain individuals.

Music/DP is meant to be fun when all is said and done, I'm fine with whatever anyone's opinion might be on a given issue. However, where there's agendas/egos (we are all fans after all), and sheer unpleasantness that's not acceptable, I think most of us would agree.

I suppose it´s about me... emoticon I say that to me, THOBL is by far the worst recording with IG on vocals, it´s incredibly dated soundwise (typical 80s sound in worst possible meaning) and totally uninspired. However I do agree with second part of statement - everyone there is entitled to present their opinions and everyone has a right to prefer anyone in band to anyone else. When someone say that JLT singing was without a doubt better in some phase of his career than IG´s singing - that opinion means nothing to me precisely for the reason you described - I feel it completely reversed.

In this instance ptr the HOBL example was you, but of course it is something that everyone does from time to time. I play HOBL and PS more than any other DP studio albums, the only original MKII album I ever play is Fireball. Both IR and MH were super-ceded by the live version of every song, and WDWTWA is my least favourite MKII album ever.

As for JLT I have not heard anything by him for many years (through choice), but the last time I did hear him I thought his voice had aged far better than IG. However it didn't (and doesn't) mean I ever wanted to hear him sing, simply I thought his voice hadn't lost as much as IG. That may also be down to the fact that IG had more to lose, but we have to be fair to JLT, he did look after his voice.

Edit...As per the earlier discussion, none of the above are facts, they are my opinion. The same as HOBL is your least favoured IG album, just an opinion, there is no proof it is the worst album. As I said, this is why I believe the RRHOF is a pointless excercise, it is only opinions who is deserving to be inducted, nothing factual.

For ptr, HOBL is the worst DP album with Gillan.

For me, HOBL is the worst DP album with Blackmore.

So if both him and me are right, there can be only one album which is possibly worse than HOBL: the only one with neither Blackmore nor Gillan contributing, Come Taste The Band. But as both ptr and I rate CTTB higher than HOBL, that means that if both him and me are right, HOBL is the worst DP album ever.

Can't argue with such evidence emoticon
