Ranking the "one-album" lineups!

There are about two or three lineups that released a single album. Which is the best?

1st = Come Taste the Band (Mark 4)
2nd = Slaves and Masters (Mark 5)
3rd = The Battle Rages On (Mark 2c)

What about you? How do you rank 'em?

To start with.. "mk2c" is not a lineup I know of. I do know of mk II though.

Come Taste the Band.

Re:

I agree to Concrete god that "Mk IIc" isn't a lineup. Moreover, Battle is not a proper Mk II album because the songs had originally been written and recorded to have JLT singing on them.

The other two are difficult to compare. Come Taste may have advantage if you compare the albums "as such", but considering the historical context we know that shortly after Come Taste the band broke up whereas S&M didn't bring the band to an end. So we may consider Come Taste being a good moment without a future and S&M being a weak moment with a long future following.

Any MKII period is a line-up, but TBRO certainly not a one album line up. A seven studio album line-up with a couple of breaks in between.

I like S&M because because the band sounds excellent, along with Ritchie being a better player. CTTB is a fine album, but too much 'funk' and the cringe-worthy Coverdale and Hughes put a damper on it for me. emoticon

Not sure of TBRO being one album. Did many.

CTTB - to me is a Whitesnake album
S&M - a Rainbow album

But as close to purple as Purpendicular which is a favourite of mine.

I have fondness for all three MKi albums, however all three above would get played more.

Re:

To me, CTTB is not a Whitesnake album. Only in Whitesnake Coverdale was the boss and defined musical direction. To some this nuance from mkIV may be irrelevant, to me it means a world of difference. Whitesnake, even with Lord&Paice, lack the musical substance for which I love Deep Purple, any line up.
I don't share the "CTTB is Whitesnake" viewpoint, but I admit it could rise a good discussion.

If or not S&M is to be considered a Rainbow album has been discussed almost to death, and all I can say is that I cannot see what other Rainbow album it sounds familiar to. It's different from all other Deep Purple albums for sure, but I'd say the same about all JLT-Rainbow. But, Purple Rainbow or whatever, S&M was a Ritchie Blackmore album. No doubt he was the boss then.

I do wonder what TBRO would have been like if JLT did lyrics and vocals on it. I imagine it would have been a very different album alltogether.

1. CTTB
2. S&M

TBRO is from a line-up that did other albums as well...
