WHITESNAKE - The Real Story Behind "Here I Go Again" (An Audio Documentary)

Probably not the best title - as it isn't just that. But an American audio documentary insight into DC and the 'Americanisation' time of pre and during 1987, involving folk like Kalodner, Kitaen and Calner. Including DC singing a New York salsa commercial! Calner lent DC the money to finish the Still of the Night video and the rest, as they say, is history. An enjoyable insight and also the personalities. Kalodner comes over as a bit of an arse, he clearly sorted a lot out to create all that WS 1987 success like the poor previous producer and average prior to Sykes band!

This is very illuminating. ...a lot of Tawny self promotion and Callner putting the boot in of course, but much truth too. We know DCs version of events well, the £3M in debt etc ....but I wasn't aware he had to do commercial's or was in such a perilous financial situation on a personal level. You’d think he’d have past DP and WS royalties to fall back on at lease.

The way MC tells it, Geffen and Kaufman had dumped him, leaving him to bail DC out, and loan him funds to complete the Still of the night video shoot.
Surely, with the album in the can, there’s no way ‘his career was over’ as alleged, that depended on the success of the LP when eventually released.

Anyhow, we know what happened next, and perhaps Geffen and Kaufman had to swallow their pride, and crawl back to DC?

Re Tawny, I’m unaware as to why they divorced, but it’s an interesting point she makes about DC needing the spotlight, I can’t believe he’d divorce her simply because of that as even around SOTT she was still an asset to the WS brand.

Perhaps in the aftermath of the 1990 tour, they simply decided they were no longer of use to each other.

Listening to that ... Kalodner is such an arrogant guy. He starts off by insulting Martin Birch (while not a great producer was with Deep Purple and Whitesnake for a bunch of years and was involved in some of the best rock albums of all time) and goes from there.

I've long suspected that Coverdale was in deep, deep debt by the time 1987 rolled in. In fact he assumed much of Whitesnake's debt when he bought John Colletta out in 1983 as I remember. So that is not surprising in the slightest.

Kalodner has worked wonders for several as an a&R guy, but yeah, he's pretty arrogant but to downplay Birch's abilities as a producer is [sign in to see URL] mean, DP, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, [sign in to see URL] guy knows what he's doing.

Just listened to this. Lots of self promotion all round from the participants who all reckon they were most responsible for the success of the 1987 album. Seems like it was everybody apart from Coverdale! I thought Kalodner and Callner came across as arrogant. Tawny wasn't too bad and it's interesting that DC has heaped a fair amount of praise on her in the promotion of the 30th anniversary re-release, given her main gripe in this is that he had apparently always refused to give any credit for the part she played in breaking WS in America.

I have to admit to being pissed off at Kalodner describing old WS as 'nice but extremely average' and Martin Birch as 'second rate'. And for Callner to say WS were like Milli Vanilli stinks of sour grapes.

Callner makes out like he saved Coverdale’s career, putting the boot w details of not being able to pay for dinner, car insurance etc

Agreed- Callner sounded the most bitter. I was particularly bemused by the story about when DC apparently called to say he was bringing Callner and his wife 'a present'. Callner & his wife appeared to suggest that they were 'expecting' the present to be a huge sum of money- at least £1million is the figure mentioned by Callner, on the basis that he felt this what he deserved for his part in making WS a huge success. This was despite him having already been paid to make the videos and having been repaid whatever money he allegedly loaned DC to finish the SOTN video. Why DC would be in any way obliged to give this guy that sort of money as 'a present' is beyond me. Callner came across as a total arse IMO.

and callner states Coverdale's career was 'over' according to Geffen/Kaufman etc, surely that was dependent on the success of the record, which had just been released?

Kalodner also wanted young good looking boys in the band. He said to DC that Jon Lord does not fit to the band.
