Do you think that the 20 albums are worthy to carry the name DP?

Deep Purple released twenty albums and hopefully another one, many fans considers classic albums IN ROCK, FIREBALL, MACHINE HEAD and BURN are the worthy to be called a Deep Purple album.

Others do not considers S&M as a real DP album, they think it's a Rainbow album and some fans don't considers CTTB, PURPENDICULAR, etc. as a Deep Purple album, these are good albums, but maybe because they don't sound like the classic hard rock Mark II.

Do you think all the 20 albums are worthy to be called DP albums?
If not, which of the 20 albums do you considers worthy to be called DP album?

In my humble opinion it's a big YES!

The problem is DP sound did not start with "In Rock" and it started with "Shades of Deep Purple", that's Purple original sound, DP did not starts like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and others which begins their careers with their trademark sound.

I'm bias when it comes to other bands though. emoticon

I considers only the first 8 Black Sabbath albums with Ozzy as the real BS, the first 6 Bad Company albums with Rodgers, the first 6 Doors album, and many other bands.

I´ll put it this way - the only album which would make DP discography better if was deleted from DP catalog, it´s Slaves&Masters... it would be average at the best among Rainbow albums and it´s black awful spot in DP discography. The rest is great, fine or... acceptable (even the worst album with Gillan on vocals which is definately The House Of Blue Light).

Well this is only your opinion, stating something as "definitely" seems to be stating it as fact which it isn't. HOBL is my favorite album since the reunion, easily the album that I play most often these days.
I am guessing that every person on this board has their own favorite album from their own preferred line up, but there is no "fact" over which is the best or worst album, just opinion.

I have no time for S&M, although it is not a Rainbow album, it says Deep Purple on the cover so it is.

After S&M I am afraid there is not an album that excites me at all, each album having the odd track that I like rather than the whole album.

Of course all 20 are real deep purple albums. Deep Purple are and always have been bigger than the individual members of the band.

Every line up had it's own [sign in to see URL] all deserve to carry the DP name. The most disappointing album to me was Stormbringer. After the line up change they recorded the excellent Burn and had a great tour. HOBL is not a bad album at all. At times I think it might be the best reunion album(other times I think not). I'll always prefer MKII and MKI(in that order) over the other line ups.

I do, even Slaves & Masters ! I think "Deep Purple" and "Stormbringer" are the ones i almost don't listen to nowadays but they still have some great pieces of music on it !

Once again quite a philosophical question. From the principle POV I'd say that every album which as been defined as a DP album by the respective musicians has every right to be called a DP album.

Now of course everyone of us has his definition of what "Deep Purple" is about for him. And so everyone can judge for every album how much it matches his / her understanding of "DP". Here's my "judge", given in percent numbers:

The Mk I albums: 70%. They hadn't really defined themselves, but a lot of what was to become the famous DP was already there.

The Mk IIa albums: 100%.

Burn: 85%.

Stormbringer: 60%. Too much "shoeshine music". I like Love Don't Mean A Thing and all that, but that's not what DP is about for me.

CTTB: 75%. Different sound and feel compared to Mk II, but a similar philosophy: Let's play some rock'n'roll. Certainly more DP than Stormbringer.

Perfect Strangers: 90%.

HOBL: 50%. Synths instead of organ, strained vocals, weak ideas for the songs, only the way they play their instruments saves it.

S&M: 60%. Similar to Stormbringer, I like Fortuneteller and Breakfast In Bed, but that's not DP to me.

TBRO: 50%. Gillan singing to tracks which were recorded to have JLT singing to them - that's not the way to make an album.

Purpendicular: 60%. Too much patchwork.

Abandon, Bananas, ROTD, inFinite: Didn't listen to them often enough to be able to state an exact number. All between 50 and 70%.

Now What?!: 85%. The most progressive DP album since Burn.

So no album comes in below 50% which means that for me all of them are DP albums. emoticon

A vinyl copy of "S&M" arrived at my doorstep today. I'm one of those who really enjoy this album, a good album in my opinion.
