I saw DP in Mansfield, Mass on Sunday

And I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed. Some thoughts.

As I just read in another post, Alice Cooper stole the show. It is almost an unfair comparison. Alice has a band full of much younger members, who had huge energy, they were all over the stage. And there was Nina Strauss. Who was, um, seriously good looking as well as talented. The energy level was tremendous and DP can't compete with that. And Alice stuck more to the hits. You also can't discount the theatrics. You are just entertained by the whole show.

DP performed well, I won't say they didn't, but it seemed a bit flat after watching Alice. Several things also brought the energy down. Sadly, every time they played a song people didn't know, the audience just sort of died down. Also with Don's very extended keyboard solo. Its not what people are there to see. The second half of their set was better, starting with Perfect Strangers.

Lastly, age is taking its toll, especially with Ian G. Roger had good energy, Steve did good, but Ian just came across as old. Alice Cooper is almost the same age but seemed a good 20 years younger. It was a stark comparison.

Lastly, I have seen DP five times now with Steve, but not since 2004 before this. And something in the arrangements of the songs wasn't good. They just didn't come across as well as I have seen before, especially at the start with Highway Star and Fireball.

I enjoyed the show but I can see why this may be the farewell tour. They are losing their edge.

And if DP stuck more to their hits, (nearly) everybody here would complain.

They can never win in this... There are people moaning about atmosphere going down during songs audience dont know (whose mistake is that, ehm? - how shocking it´s mistake of this particular audience!) and when they play what audience know - it´s bad because they dont play new stuff. You can never do good, every decision you are going to do is going to be wrong. It must be frustrating for artist. As European watching the American tourleg, I wouldnt be frustrated about the band´s performance, I would be frustrated about audience obviously.

Awww, those poor musicians. I feel so sorry for them.

i understood RickWells in a way that his disppointment wasn't just down to the choice of songs.

So are you saying the band are performing well, it is the audience that are at fault?

Let´s say that noone should be disappointed by presence of new or recent stuff in DP setlist. It simply makes no sense to me, it´s logic that band which is still active and recording is going to present their recent material - and it´s fault of audience if they dont know that. When I go to the show which I´m not so familiar with, I always buy the album which is connected to the tour before the gig - it´s better to know the probable material. It´s logic that reaction to old known stuff and uknown stuff is different.

But that has no effect on the performance of the band. Rick Wells was disappointed with the performance of the band.

2nd thing goes to audience - it´s mistake of audience, not the band.
