your smokin! emoticon

Your kidding right?????? emoticon

How many versions of POH have you not heard?????
Okay nothing tops the studio version, but Morse doesn't solo in any song with Purple
as good as he did in POH live(.)

Also check out Satriani's versions with them
a little more faithful to Ritchie, but then again he(Joe)was in general.
Morses versions weren't any better, just different and very exciting. emoticon

Of Course Mary Long Studio is great but I actually like the Live Versions with Morse that I have heard better.

Completely agree. I prefer the Morse version as well.

This is an interesting discussion Gillan's Mic/FatLaz. POH is in my top 5 Purp tracks. I love Satch's performances;(Fireball over Switzerland, The Battle & EE&S - in my collection) & the Morse LAO 96 is awesome !.

But why and I think this is what our equine mates are alluding to, did Blackers not play this live when every other official MH track was performed?

Any thoughts?

I may be wrong, but Mabye Im a Leo and Never Before were never part of the setlist, neither.

What I was trying to say earlier, before GMS wanted to score 2 bags from me was, wouldnt it have been cool if POH was part of the setlist and on MIJ emoticon WOW!

As to why Blackmore never played it....were talkin' about Blackmore here! A big '?????????????' sums it up.

Hey Pony,

I think that Maybe I'm a Leo & Never Before were part of the set list in 72 (see In Concert) but I have no idea whether they played them in Japan. You're right though, POH on MIJ would be the icing on the cake. Personally, I'd replace The Mule with it as I'm not a big drum solo fan (although I love the studio version).

MIAL and NB were only done for the BBC In Concert, Smoke too - and that didn't make the regular set again until June. The Japanese sets are on the Live In Japan 3CD set.

Re: Mary Long

I missed that one.

I have the 1981 HEC Enterprises, Deep Purple In Concert, manufactured by Portrait Records/CBS...

Never Before ends side 3.

As this is vinyl record, there is no MIAL or Smoke....

Still, a damn shame about no POH performed live back in the day....one of the greatest Purple songs ever.

Exactly, LakeG. Speaking for myself, I would've loved to have heard Blackmore + Lord trading those magnificent solos in a live setting, Blackmore's frantic-yet-tightly controlled riffing throughout, and Glover + Paice's incredible rhythm section holding it all together to be capped by the stellar vocals of Gillan in his prime...
The versions you cite with Satriani handling the guitar duties certainly are fantastic (I gotta add two more - "Flying In A Purple Dream" + "A Light From Deep Darkness" aka "Made In Germany, Vols. I + II"), and I also quite enjoy the "Live At The Olympia" version.
The major problem I had when I first got hold of the MkVI boots was NOT skipping right to "Pictures Of Home"! I'd waited so long for a live version, I almost couldn't control my curiosity. I was confident that Striani would deliver the goods, so I decided to go in order so as to heighten the anticipation...it was well worth it! emoticon
As for why Blackmore wouldn't agree to play this live, I've no idea. As we've seen through the years, the blame for every MkII formation's somewhat stagnant set lists has been nearly equally doled out to both Gillan + Blackmore. And I have to say, since the same trend (seldom changing set lists, for the most part) seems to still be in effect for over a decade since Blackmore departed the group, I honestly can't entirely put the onus on him. On the other hand,I don't hesitate to give the "Non-Blackmore Purple" credit for putting things either back in the set list (albeit for relatively short terms) that hadn't been there for decades and for putting things in that've never been there, all from the same MkII eras.
My only beef is that the more recent work - '95 to the present - should constitute the bulk of the set, with at maximum 4 or 5 'oldies' being rotated in and out on a regular basis.

Re: Mary Long

There was a guy that posted a quote here from Blckmore once,I forget who it was but he quoted him as saying that they did try out POH in concert and he looked out at the crowd and they didn't seem to be enjoying it.
I argued it with him and asked if he would reveal his source on the matter and I got no reply.
However I do seem to remember Blackmore saying that(once)I just can't remember where I read it.I could be wrong but for soome reason when the guy wrote about it
a light went on in my head about it.
I think it may have been in Germany. emoticon
