Mary Long
I just bought the Perihelion DVD - this song was unbelievable.. Morse's rhythm and great solo brought new life to this song and blows away the original. This DVD is quite good - Fools was another surprise with some great Morse work again.

Re: Mary Long
I agree. Mary Long sounds much better on Perihelion then on WDWTWA. Definetely One of the highlights of this brilliant DVD.

Re: Mary Long
You guys are hitting on the MEDS again, just when I thought you guys had cleaned up. There is NO WAY on this planet that anyone in a studio or live could TOP not only TMIB with his solo on Mary Long or the song from the WDWTWA Album. Take a deep breath fellas and then try to decrease your daily dosage.

For me he sounds like he can't be bothered on that particular solo, not to mention the whole song which is basically based on the vocal melody line (i.e. Gillan's work). Ritchie does have some great moments on that album (such as the AMAZING solo on Place In Line for example) but Mary Long really ain't one of them.

Exactly, Christos! Blackmore's solo and the riffing (or picking or whatever the hell the correct term is) for the last couple of minutes during "Place In Line" is some of the man's greatest work! I've been saying it since 1973.
That's the type of material that places Blackmore head + shoulders above the rest, in my eyes and ears! The work on "PIL" ranks right up there with "Run With The Wolf" from "Rising" as some of Blackmore's most incredible - yet strangely underrated, it seems - work that I ever heard him do.
"Place In Line" - an undeservedly underrated Deep Purple classic!

Re: Mary Long
Yeah, Blackmore did swell playing Mary Long, and Pictures of Home, and everything else he ignored for Purples' live sets.
Mary Long from Perihelion is one of the highlights of a very good DVD performance.

Re: Mary Long
Complete agreement about "Pictures Of Home", too, my equine friend! Some of Blackmore's finest playing!

Re: Mary Long
I like the mk Morse version as well. It was great to hear this one live and outside of the WDWTWA context where the band was begining to implode. Morse did a damn good job on this one.
