Man i love SM!!! I think this interview was done on purpose to broker guest appearances on upcoming US and other areas (i.e. UK) for former members. Moreover 50 yr anniversary is next year and they need to hype it as I assume they are going to play a few dates in 2018.
IG has always said past members are open to guest, though none have apparently showed  ... When asked in recent interviews RG and IP indicated that they have yet be contacted by past members looking to guest at Long Goodbye Tour. Now SM makes it official on a major outlet! (Billboard)!!
Hoping to see RB guest in upcoming LI show, maybe RE and DC appear in CA, and NS pops up in UK show!!

Oh my.... Steve´s statement is about his positive attitude to one-off Ritchie´s guesting (even Ritchie talked about one-off)... not about Ritchie becoming DP member again and replacing Steve. Dont change the meaning of his words.
Dont expect anything, it will not happen.

On topic: I guess it depends on what "guesting" will mean, because if it's a couple of songs during an encore it could happen anywhere, anytime...no big deal.
But if it is what Ritchie probably means, that is one entire gig, then it needs a bit of preparation (=meeting beforehand) and would deserve also preparation on other levels (cameras, etc). And in that case, what do you do? Make it a surprise, and have virtually no press there amd an unprepared crowd? Or announce it, create a buzz and then risk that expectations are not met?

Let me remind you that they are on promotional tour for Infinite record which hits chart position in many countries.... I dont suppose that Ritchie would be willing to play Infinite or Now What?! stuff. They cant change their touring and marketing plans because of some ex-member who left the band decades ago and his "wishes". It´s all about Ritchie´s guesting for Smoke and Black Night or nothing. Full show with Ritchie from current DP´s point is an absolute nonsense.

Of course he would not play the new tunes, but on many levels his presence (even for one night - actually better if only for one night) would be the biggest marketing thing they could play to boost sales also of InFinite, frankly speaking - it would be discussed everywhere and would bring DP back in the spotlight for a short while.
What is highly possible, is that they start a gig with all their Morse-era songs in the setlist, then halfway through, they switch guitarist and play the old hits in succession. But only an encore? After 24 years? Dunno.

You cant expect much more than what happened in case of gigs from September 2002 with Jon for dates rescheduled from Feb.
