Yes that's the slightly odd thing about it you are right. The easy stuff seems harder for him to play! Perhaps the chord shapes don't suit his arthritis, or maybe he hears it like it was back in the day, but the brain and the fingers don't quite sync.

Some of the playing in these 2016/17 shows has been really good but different for him and, some has been pretty basically bad too! As I've said before his playing has been appropriate given where he's at now. His style has changed considerably but then most of the real the world has moved on (unlike a lot of his fans!) and him with it.

Yes, that was strange wasn't it? However as someone who suffers with arthritis in his fingers, it mustn't be understimated how even everyday tasks become impossible. Trying to play like 70's or 90's RB would be very very difficult.
