Compile MKII's "MiJ" of the reunion era

Inspired by a comment in another thread, I've decided to ask the community to provide their own playlists that would encompass best perfomances by MKII circa 1985-1993.

The objective is to compile the "Made in Japan" of the 80-90's that would mostly include post-reunion material. Only songs that meet the following criteria are allowed:
- songs from PS, HOBL, TBRO
- instrumental jams of older songs (eg. The Mule rendition from Stuttgart 1993)
- covers (Hush, Paint it Black, Luccile, etc)
- DTC
- only one MKII song from the 70's

The playlist should only include subjectively best performances by the band. Sound fidelity is of high importance as well. Total running time should be at least 90 minutes.

Re:

For me, the setlist (running order yet to be decided) would be like:

Nobody's Home
Under The Gun
Perfect Strangers
DTC - Jon Lord solo - Knocking At Your Back Door
A Gypsy's Kiss
Bad Attitude
Anyone's Daughter (only one MKII song from the 70's - here it is)
Anya
The Battle Rages On
Hush
The Mule (Stuttgart 1993)
Hall Of The Mountain King (Stuttgart 1993)

To decide about which song to take from which show I'd have to take a closer listen to the shows. Certainly Paris 1985 would be ignored completely, Knebworth would probably get one or two tracks, Hush might be from a 1988 show of which a soundboard recording exists (Italy?), the PS tracks only played at the PS tour from 1984 / early 1985 shows, Perfect Strangers and Knocking perhaps from 1987, Bad Attitude probably from Nobody's Perfect. Stuttgart 1993 might well get some more songs.

Sadly Burn from Philadelphia 1991 doesn't match the rules. emoticon

It is hard to do this. Many shows were better than what has been released. PS live was nice. Detroit PS #1 was better as was the HOBL show in Toledo. They were my favorites of the era. We all saw some shows where IG was ragged and maybe Ritchie was a bit petulant, but I always thought that the band, IG included, tried to put on the best show possible.

Either way, find a whole show where IG was in good form and I think that you will find a show comparable, in relative terms, to MIJ.

Well, obviously it can't be a whole show from start to finish because of the old material. More like a compilation from PS, HOBL and TBRO tours, which would only include the post-reunion material.

Well, you can cheat here a bit but substituting Anyone's Daughter with Speed King emoticon

No love for Dead or Alive or its cousin Twist in the Tail? :P Although they both sound similar to Gypsy's Kiss which is already present in the list..

Now there's also HLW and Unwritten Law...

I would probably open with 'Gypsy's Kiss' and close with 'Dead Or Alive'. 'Speed King' as an encore. In between, 'Perfect Strangers', 'Mad Dog', 'Spanish Archer', 'Wasted Sunsets', 'Strange Ways', 'Battle Rages On', 'Not Responsible', 'Ramshackle Man' and maybe 'One Man's Meat'.

Well there were only 7 tracks in the MIJ set plus 3 encores so;

Nobody's Home (encore- replaces Black Night)
Gypsy's Kiss (set opener)
Perfect Strangers

Strangeways (extended to Space Truckin' length)
Bad Attitude
Unwritten Law (drum solo)

Ramshackle Man (replaces Lazy)
Battle Rages On
Talk about Love (replaces Skow- extended to incorporate gtr voc duel)
Twist in The Tale (encore- replaces speed king)

I'd be happy with that and wouldn't need DTC, a cover or a 70's track.

- Bach's Toccata e Fuga as intro, then
- A Gypsy's Kiss as opener, followed by
- Bad Attitude to set the stage.

- Strangeways
- Nobody's Home
- Anya
- Under The Gun
- Blues/Dead or Alive
- Twist in the Tale
- The Unwritten Law/Drum solo
- Perfect Strangers
- Keyboard solo/Knockin' at Your Backdoor
- Hall of the Mountain King

Encores
- Bass Solo/Battle Rages On
- Highway Star

Let me think about which versions...

Exactly. I thought about Twist but decided against it. I think one of these fast songs - Gypsy's Kiss - is enough.

I've me reasons for not including them. If they had done Unwritten Law properly live, it would have been an option, but they didn't.

Re: Compile MKII's "MiJ" of the reunion era

Wonderful thread Viciious - right up the Compilation Fairy's strasse!

I did a post some years ago where I created an enormous playlist of, IMHO, the best versions of live tracks (any Mark), in chronological order of each album so I'll use that as a basis. This list weighted inputs such as fidelity, the line up being authentic and contemporaneous. So a MK2 live WFT would in theory rank higher than a MKMorse WFT and a MK2b Knockin' would rank higher than a MK2c Knockin' and official or soundboard would be more favoured than a dodgy bootleg.

Then of course, you are tossing in covers, DTC & one MKIIa original and the >90 minute constraint as well as the running order. You little beauty, you!

So, given that this is all about showcasing the best MK2reunion tracks (or even the most interesting/rare?), the best MK2 reunion live versions (or can we be creative and throw in later MK versions of Mk2 reunion?) and the best sound quality, I give you an album that I would buy:

Side 1
Perfect Strangers (Live in Stuttgart 16/10/93) 6:57
Dead or Alive (Nobody's Perfect 04/09/87) 7:06
Bad Attitude (Nobody's Perfect 30/05/87) 5:31
Hard Lovin' Woman (Nobody's Perfect 30/05/87) 5:01

Side 2
Knockin' (They'll be The Masters 22/02/91) 10:01
The Battle Rages On (Live in Stuttgart 16/10/93) 6:38
Under The Gun (Perfect Strangers Live Australia 84) 5:58

Side 3
Anya (Live in Stuttgart16/10/93) 12:15
Anyone's Daughter (In Your Trousers 13/11/93) 4:39
Ramshackle Man (The Battle 03/12/93) 5:17

Side 4
A Twist In The Tail (Birmingham 09/11/93) 4:37
The Unwritten Law (Hungary Days 26-28/01/87) 6:30
The Mule (Live in Stuttgart 16/10/93) 2:20
Difficult To Cure (Perfect Strangers Live Australia 84) 4:30
ENCORE: Speed King (Live In Stuttgart 16/10/93) 7:25

Cheats - One MK5 and one MK6 rendition of MK2 reunion tracks & 2 MK2 tracks (one encore though!)
Didn't make the cut - Gypsy's Kiss, Nobody's Home, Call Of The Wild, Talk About Love from above albums.

Lake
