Re: Your least favorite(worst) DP Item

Imo Gillan's tone changed significantly on HOBL (I think he got his tonsils removed prior to recording of the album). He sounded less nasally and more like his usual self on PS and the subsequent tour..

They did shoot themselves in the foot on most of their releases from the PS/HOBL tours. Some were good, though. The PS Live from Australia is an nice release, as are a couple of others. Then there is the Paris show, which never should have seen the light of day. Many others with Gillan in various states of 'hoarseness' are out there.

I guess that my point is that there should be recordings of the first PS Detroit show and the Toledo HOBL show. There are recordings of other Detroit shows out there, but why not the first PS show? They must have recorded it as they seemed to record lots of shows on the tour. Instead, they pop out a bunch of stuff that is inferior to what should be released. Strange. emoticon

I totally agree with you. That first Detroit show was amazing, from ALL of them. The second one was great from all but Gillan

It was superb. It was probably the best IG sounded during the PS tour. IG was raspy for the second show, to say it mildly. From what I've heard of the HOBL tour, IG sounded much better. There are some really good bootlegs out there. Some audience filmed stuff. I heard some of the HOBL show at Detroit that somebody filmed and IG was in pretty good shape. It would be nice to hear the Toledo show. Too bad he couldn't keep it up. emoticon

That HoBL Detroit show all were great and we got a guitar smash from Ritchie! That said, I preferred the "intimacy" of the smaller Toledo show...

Absolutely.

Detroit 1987 also has that amazing version of Lazy with the extended introduction.

There is a audience film of this concert on Youtube. It's a little fuzzy at times, but Gillan sounds better that usual and the band is rockin'.

I have that whole show on vhs somewhere...its not as grainy/fuzzy as the one that's on YouTube but there's still some visual distortion to it. I agree, Gillan sounds good and Ritchie was on fire. We always got a good show from Ritchie when he came through Detroit.

And Toledo, too. Always played here with Rainbow. Great stuff.

Probably the tribute record "Smoke on the water - a Tribute". I think it's the only Purple related item that really never gets played.
