Deep Purple - Who ultimately brought the most to the table ?
Notwithstanding the chemistry and the technical brilliance of the individual members, if you had to choose one, which member throughout all of the 'mk's' (in hindsight) ultimately brought the most to the table ?

Re:
Difficult question. Evenyone of them brought something to the table, and as different fans focus on different things (musical virtuosity, rock'n'roll feeling, band spirit, whatever), different fans will consider different band members being the one who brought the most.
For me, it's clear who contributed most to what "Deep Purple" means to me. The guy who gave the name to the band. Ricardo. But that doesn't mean that the others' contributions were unimportant. For post-Blackmore DP, it's Don Airey for me because of his excellent songwriting input to the strongest post-Blackmore album, Now What?!.

I should clarify, I meant from a musical 'historical' perspective. DP were there and a big part of the foundations of Rock whilst they were being laid.
I believe it to be RB too. There were some truly awesome drummers/bass/keyboard players in other bands too ... but only DP had a Ritchie.

Re:
I think that Mk2 lineup is band which made it..... and without any of these guys in band at THAT time it would be impossible. Band is collective work.

Re:
Blackmore without a shadow of a doubt brought the most to the table. But Lord and Paiceys virtuosity and Gillans voice were also huge factors in their success.Roger was less skilled instrumentally but did input to the songwriting side.I agree with you Johnny, in an era of guitar heros there was only ONE Ritchie Blackmore

It's quite simple: When it's about who did good contributions, it's collective work. If it's about who did bad contributions, it's time to state names, first of all of course The Incarnation Of The Evil (the guy who gave the name to the band).

Re:
It´s not a taboo topic, it´s topic which can be answered by many ways according to our own attitude. My attitude is to look at the band as one unity made from five cooperative guys rather than competition between five individuals. Band is collective institution - one member without the rest is nothing.
Question ala "who is the member most responsible for band´s overall success" would have very surprising answer by me.... Roger Glover, the guy who managed band to work so well for so long time, he has been working as some sort of band´s "glue" - once it was described as knife and fork (IG/RB) on different sides of plate with stunning meal - and Roger is that plate which makes you able to eat that meal and make knife and fork work together...

AFAIK Led Zeppelin had Jimmy Page, Black Sabbath Tony Iommi and UFO Michael Schenker.
To name a few.
