Evaluating members of Mk 2 today

So RB, IG, IP, and RG are still active recording and touring today - that a plus!!! Many of their peers have long finished or simply dropped dead emoticon

How would you rate each member's performance these days both from performing live and recording?

Here's my rating:

Roger Glover to me is the best - if anything he seems to have gotten more aggressive the older he's become. Loved his playing on Infinite and still plays very well live with a lot of energy

Next I would say IP - On Infinite - it was the best he sounded since TBRO...the drums actually explode and he mixes things up from playing super heavy to melodic...well done on Infinite. Live he is sometimes hit or miss, age having caught up with him...that combined with drumming taking more physically out of you than guitar or singing. It seems the past 2 years or so he has picked it up live. He's not playing like he did in the 70s, but every now and then he lets it fly.

RB and IG I say are tied these days. IG sounds pretty good in the studio, RB plays with no balls anymore emoticon emoticon

IG can't really cut it live anymore and RB can every now and then sounds decent (but nothing like the past)...I don't like that clean strat sound - dirty it up a little RB.

In the end be happy they can still play and sound good. Its coming to an end soon....

I have to say three things to you:
1.) I would agree that Roger actually got better as bass player especially since Steve arrived to the band, because as Roger mentioned few times - Steve learned him some new stuff... emoticon
2.) I would not be so cruel to IG - he is struggling with stuff like Space Trucking (that´s why I repeatedly say they should drop it), but when I saw them week ago - he even managed to do Bloodsucker with great deal of dignity. But it´s true - it´s about good or bad night.
3.) I must say that feeling after the end of your hometown gig which is part of "Long Goodbye Tour" - which might be the last one ever in your country (BTW it was their 20th show in CZ since 91 and according to promoter there were about 13 thousand people in audience!) and you have no tickets for any future gigs anymore.... it´s very strange case of mixed emotions - it´s mixture of sadness, nostalgy, happiness and "pride" because you know that if THIS is the end, they are going to end at the high wave... It was my 18th gig - and I really hope that I´ll be able to see two others sometime in near future. I still hear words of Ian Paice from documentary about Infinite - lots of people yet dont know how much they are going to miss them when they will really stop...

I concur, Roger is playing as well, if not better than ever. Certainly playing more aggressively than I can remember.

Little Ian sounds good on Infinite, live it is more of a struggle for him. However I have never se him give what could be described as a poor performance.

IG clearly has the toughest job, so it is with a little sadness that I have to say he is by a milion miles the weak link in DP. He cannot sing the old songs in anything like an aceptable manner and seems un - willing to learn the new songs. To see him holding the lyrics on sheets of paper is embarrassing, the band has to learn how to play the new songs, is it too much for the singer to learn the lyrics?

RB has played so few rock shows over the last 20 year's it is difficult to say anything positive. The shows last year sounded like a parody of his previous self, I fail to see how anyone could get any pleasure watching him playing like this.

The touring DP band are in good form rythimacally with RG and IP, still a good rythm section considering their age. The musicality these days comes from SM and DA who get stronger and stronger, and their interplay gets better every tour.

So the one who has the most difficult job - Gillan - and the one who raises the highest expectations - Blackmore - get the worst critics. That's not surprising. I agree that Glover and Paice still fire off a decent performance, but their job is much more simple.

Like many other comparisons, this one doesn't work straightly.

You are of course correct, however I don't think that anyone could disagree that RG & IP HAVE done more to keep their performance levels higher than IG? He has been abusing his voice since the late 70's, that is more the reason for his poor levels now than simply aging.
And of course RB not playing rock since 1997 was never going to keep his playing to the previous high standard.

Gillan certainly drank too much to keep his voice in shape.

They are ALL well past thier best but

Rog is acceptable though his job is the simplest of the lot.

Paicey is still recognisable but is a shadow of his former self ,of course age has a lot to do with it but i just saw Nicko McBrain with Maiden 2 weeks ago and hes still incredibly good live and is OLDER than Ian.but then we all age at different rates.

Gillans sadly well past it and has been for many years he looks and sings like an old man which is after all what he is.

Blackers is also well past his prime and a pale shadow of former glories ,there is still some of hie instantly recognisable style there but sadly no passion or fire left in his rock playing.

all in all its time to call it a day for them all IMHO.

McBrain is 4 years younger than Ian Paice.

yep my mistake your correct nicko is 65 next week (i always have it in my head that Paicey is younger than he is for some reason?)but my point is still valid i.e. they are close in age but Nicko still plays with much more energy than Paicey does today or indeed did 10 never mind 4 years years ago!!

When you judge about Ian Paice, please consider his health state.
