How can you say that? Oh, wind up mode. Never mind, worth responding.

Since 2003...

He has released two studio albums of new material (both well received), one studio album of his own covers (mixed reception) and is working on an album of new material for next year. He has released a range of live albums and DVDs (something he didn't do much of in the old days and one of which is regarded as a live classic) and has also toured extensively to promote new songs and to present old material, sometimes going back to songs like Take Me With You and Walking in the Shadow of the Blues.

He's also working on remixing and presenting old material back to the fan base (he has the masters and full rehearsal tapes for 1987 and this will be released later this year) and is finishing a live product for The Purple Tour (which I understand was very successful for him and the band). He has released older live recordings and videos from 1984, 1990 etc.

Whatever you think of his vocal abilities these days David is most definitely straddling the past and present. He's even brought back his original guitarist at several shows to play with the current band.

Whitesnake shows still sell out and do good business, whether it's co-headlining or playing on their own. They still sell new music (probably in line with the amount of records sold by bands like Deep Purple etc) and they are most definitely an active band. Whitesnake remains a successful musical brand.

None of this means we shouldn't criticise. Of course we should. His live voice is only good for so many shows, some of the players are just too over the top for too much of the time. But he's doing what he wants in the way he wants. Would you rather it was just a straight cash grab like Ritchie last year?

Things may take longer than we would like but it doesn't sound like he's semi-retired to me, or living on past glories.

Very well said indeed Sir.

If the whole thing was with Bernie, then I'd be positive about it. However, my understanding is that the blues album would still feature Reb and Joel as the main guitarists with the likes of Bernie being 'guests'. And the idea of them re-doing old WS tracks is less than appealing to me.

Maybe it's the cynic in me but I honestly will be surprised if this blues album ever happens. DC has been talking about this and an acoustic album for years now yet he's still decided another WS album comes first. Don't get me wrong- I'd actually rather he was recording new material rather than rerecording old WS songs either in an acoustic or blues style. The point is that DC seems unwilling to step out of his comfort zone- which is the modern day WS- and therefore I have my doubts as to whether we'll ever see him do anything else

And yet he just released an album of Purple covers...Whitesnake-style, okay, but still outside his confort zone.

Re: New Studio Album

I have a friend who works in concert promotions out here in the States and he told me the Purple Tour in 2015 was "surprisingly successful" (his words) for Whitesnake. A bit stunning for the US in this day in age particularly based on songs people hadn't heard fresh in 40 years.

That's second hand information of course so I can't verify the extent of "success" mind you. However, I would wager that this contributed to Coverdale's decision to carry on despite having thoughts of retirement.

As for a new album. It is what it is. I wish he would tone down the histrionics but ... it's his career. Maybe cutting back on the touring would help but, in reality that is how musicians make money nowadays because albums no longer sell and streaming has destroyed artist royalties.

David has been quoted as saying the last two Whitesnake tours (inc The Purple Tour) were the most successful for the band since 2003. I imagine this also means lucrative.

Re: New Studio Album

On Classicrock

Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale says that he feels sad for Jimmy Page because of the guitarist's inability to get his Led Zeppelin bandmates to "commit to making a new record or touring."

Coverdale made the comments to Sweden Rock Magazine while discussing his plans to include some rarities on upcoming reissues of some of Whitesnake's classic albums.

The Whitesnake icon was asked if he planned exhaustive reissue campaign similar to the one that Page undertook for the Led Zeppelin album catalog and he responded, "I'm not going that far. The saddest thing for me, and my dear, dear, dear beloved friend Jimmy Page, I think one of the reasons he's explored the Zeppelin catalog so significantly is because he can't get the guys to commit to making a new record or touring.

"Zeppelin's his baby, as Whitesnake is mine, but I'm very happy to say I have a fabulous fresh chapter of Whitesnake. I'm still a recording entity and I'm still a touring entity. The last two years have literally been the most successful we've had forever. It's been fabulous. Next year, God willing, won't be any different. This year, we're gonna be all studio, write a new album and have new product for next year.

"But can you see the comparison, whereas Jimmy doesn't have that - he doesn't have an opportunity. I've recommended to him for years to do what Carlos Santana did with 'Supernatural'. Jimmy's got all these great songs. I said, 'I'm there for you. I'll do a couple of songs for you, without a doubt.' I said, 'Do something like 'Supernatural'. At least you're playing.' It breaks my heart, 'cause he's such a f***ing valuable musician. With what he's already given to us, he doesn't really owe us anything, but I just know that he's still valid and relevant and can still play amazing guitar and write amazing songs. Where do you go after f***ing Led Zeppelin, dude? Where do you go?"

I stumbled upon this on youtube ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63caXqpkZ0s&t=2539s

A compilation of Coverdale/Page live/rehersals/soundcheck video. This has to be some of the "loads of video" from CP that DC was talking about last year. Interesting stuff. Different video angles from the tour too.

As for above. Page has wasted his talent for 37 years and it's beyond sad.

Interesting stuff. What a bugger it wasn't properly recorded.
