If the whole thing was with Bernie, then I'd be positive about it. However, my understanding is that the blues album would still feature Reb and Joel as the main guitarists with the likes of Bernie being 'guests'. And the idea of them re-doing old WS tracks is less than appealing to me.
Maybe it's the cynic in me but I honestly will be surprised if this blues album ever happens. DC has been talking about this and an acoustic album for years now yet he's still decided another WS album comes first. Don't get me wrong- I'd actually rather he was recording new material rather than rerecording old WS songs either in an acoustic or blues style. The point is that DC seems unwilling to step out of his comfort zone- which is the modern day WS- and therefore I have my doubts as to whether we'll ever see him do anything else
Whats wrong with Joel - he's a fine guitarist, very versatile and good songwriter
Absolutely nothing wrong with him, or Reb. But they need to be dialled back for Whitesnake and instead they keep shredding and shredding and shredding. Less is more.

Re: New Studio Album
Agreed- there's nothing at all wrong with Joel or indeed any of the musicians current in WS. They are all very accomplished, technically excellent musicians. However, I dread to think what they might do to old WS blues numbers like Love Man and WITSOTB. These guys just don't play with the 'feel' and simplicity that some songs need.

Re: New Studio Album
Who knows...they did a great job on The Purple album, in my opinion.

Re: New Studio Album
Well, they did a good job of doing what they do on the Purple album- i.e. they didn't play badly- but the end result was an entire album of inferior versions compared to the originals. It's not their fault the versions are inferior- the production and DC's current vocal capacity are equally to blame. I tried hard to like The Purple Album, and at one point I was just about able to convince myself it wasn't too bad. But I listened to it the other day for the first time in ages and had to turn it off.
It's not nearly as bad as Classic Rock made it out to be, but I don't think The Purple Album was DC's smartest idea all round. Equally, I don't think the current band re-hashing old WS blues classic's would be a particularly smart idea either.

Re: New Studio Album
DC's basically semi-retired living on past glories. The Purple album and the idea of re-doing more tracks simply doesn't cut it.

there aren't many rock stars from his era who aren't doing the very same if were honest.I actually quite enjoy the purple album, its inferior to the originals sure, but then most musicians are inferior to Blackmore ,Lord,Paice Bolin ,Hughes and DC in his prime .

Re:
What's the point in redoing something if the end result is inferior? And by quite some margin given the heavyhanded treatment and lack of swing/groove.

In what way shape or form was it ever going to be better than the originals ???As i already said there aren't many musicians who can get close to touching the guys who made the original recordings, but DC was quite entitled to do what he did with songs he co wrote, as a career retrospective and nostalgic look back. From some of the reviews on the forum it seems some people here liked it? myself included, so no harm done is there? It was a DIFFERENT take on classic tracks nothing more nothing less ,what would have been pointless was cloning the originals!!

Re: New Studio Album
Yes, no harm has been done with The Purple album, to say the least. I liked it very much.
I'm glad the new material is in focus, alhough I'm not sure it will be released till 2018. Why does it take them so much time these days?
Rerecording old WS tune would be nice as a bonus or something. And the task could be even more difficult than with Purple songs.

How can you say that? Oh, wind up mode. Never mind, worth responding.
Since 2003...
He has released two studio albums of new material (both well received), one studio album of his own covers (mixed reception) and is working on an album of new material for next year. He has released a range of live albums and DVDs (something he didn't do much of in the old days and one of which is regarded as a live classic) and has also toured extensively to promote new songs and to present old material, sometimes going back to songs like Take Me With You and Walking in the Shadow of the Blues.
He's also working on remixing and presenting old material back to the fan base (he has the masters and full rehearsal tapes for 1987 and this will be released later this year) and is finishing a live product for The Purple Tour (which I understand was very successful for him and the band). He has released older live recordings and videos from 1984, 1990 etc.
Whatever you think of his vocal abilities these days David is most definitely straddling the past and present. He's even brought back his original guitarist at several shows to play with the current band.
Whitesnake shows still sell out and do good business, whether it's co-headlining or playing on their own. They still sell new music (probably in line with the amount of records sold by bands like Deep Purple etc) and they are most definitely an active band. Whitesnake remains a successful musical brand.
None of this means we shouldn't criticise. Of course we should. His live voice is only good for so many shows, some of the players are just too over the top for too much of the time. But he's doing what he wants in the way he wants. Would you rather it was just a straight cash grab like Ritchie last year?
Things may take longer than we would like but it doesn't sound like he's semi-retired to me, or living on past glories.
