In a Rush mood.

I have been (re)listening to Rush for the last few months, and I do believe they're one of the greatest bands ever.

I started listening to them in the mid 80's, and have been a fan since then.

Here's how I rate the studio albums, and even though albums like Snakes and Arrows, Vapor Trails, Counterparts are very low in the list, I still think they're strong albums, even if they suffer from the "too many mid tempo songs" syndrome, which we can relate to as dP fans.

1. Permanent Waves
2. Hemispheres
3. Signals
4. Presto
5. Moving Pictures
6. Grace Under Pressure
7. Clockwork Angels
8. A Farewell to Kings
9. Fly By Night
10. 2112
11. Hold your Fire
12. Roll the Bones
13. Power Windows
14. Rush
15. Test for Echo
16. Counterparts
17. Vapor Trails
18. Snakes and Arrows
19. Caress of Steel

Big fan also here, since 1989 with a C90 tape of "Caress of steel" and "Hemispheres". "A show of hands" the first title I actually bought, on vinyl. Bought and loved them all since then. Seen them live twice. Here's my take:

Show of Hands is my favorite Rush live album. The versions of the songs are so much more vivid and powerful than the studio versions. I think it was my first Rush Cd too. I played that one to the bone!

It is an amazing live album indeed. At the time, I remember being quite confused and also amazed in seeing the same band going from "Caress of steel" to this in just a few years time. The adventurous depth of their vision got me. A few months later "Presto" came out and I couldn't believe they could reinvent themselves like that keeping such a high level. In retrospect, it's probably the farthest they got from their original sound, as later on, in one way or another they got back to a more simple and "actual trio" one, less orchestrated and layered.

Re: In a Rush mood.

Funny, I've been in a heavy Rush mode lately too. I saw them for the first time on their Permanent Waves tour so I have a pretty sentimental attachment to that one.

As far as rating them, that's going to be tough.

Studio:

1. Permanent Waves
2. 2112
3. Hemispheres
4. Farewell To Kings
5. Moving Pictures
6. Grace Under Pressure
7. Signals
8. Roll The Bones
9. Counterparts
10. Fly By Night
11. Rush
12. Clockwork Angels
13. Vapor Trails (remix)
14. Test For Echo
15. Power Windows
16. Snakes & Arrows
17. Caress of Steel
18. Hold Your Fire
19. Presto

Live Albums

1. [sign in to see URL] Left
2. All The World's A Stage
3. Different Stages
4. R30
5. R40
6. Time Machine Live
7. In Rio
8. Snakes & Arrows Live
9. Grace Under Pressure Tour
10. A Show Of Hands

Re:

Funny
My son has a bought an apartment and I helped him painting the walls and ceilings. He made a playlist of one of our favourite bands: Rush
So for more than 7 hours we only listened to Working Man, Xanadu, Roll The Bones etc.
It was real fun. But I have to confess that I prefer the albums up to Counterparts. After that they started losing me.i still bought every album, but they didn't excited me that much anymore. I miss the melodies, I have the feeling they started to be too progressive just to be progressive. Too much mid tempo songs, too little surprises

They lost me during the Power Windows/Hold Your Fire/Presto phase. There are songs off those albums that I like, but overall I found them boring. I came back in at Roll The Bones. I worked in a record store when that came out and from the first song (Dreamline) on, all I could think was "They're back!". I liked Counterparts even more.

Counterparts is a great album. Its only fault is only being maybe a couple of songs too long but it has some very intense moments.

I've never liked this band. They are excellent musicians but I find their music boring. I went to one of their concerts in 1990 with a friend who was a big fan. I fell asleep.
