Re: Infinite - the shortest Mark Morse album
Another thing.. I feel this is the album you really need to pay attention to, so many things going on.
Doesn't work as "background music".

Now for the first time I think that Mk Morse can be said to have their own identity, I may be stupid but I now get it. I now think they have a place in the DP history in a way that I haven't thought of before. What took Mk III two albums took Mk Morse six. But now they have their own place as the fourth part of DP history. Mk 1, Mk 2a+b, Mk 3, Mk Morse on equal levels, somehow.
(No, I don't count Bolin or Turner era as specific eras that matter musically wise).
You could put together a Greatest songs of the Mk Morse and yet not be able to fit all the really, really great songs in. Songs with a unique touch to them that tells it's the DP Mk Morse.
I don't know why I haven't been thinking like this before. Maybe it's the legacy of Mk2a? Maybe it's because they now have two undisputable really, really great albums (although I really liked Bananas and ROTD)? Maybe I'm slow?
The last DP albums imho rank right behind some of the best DP ever made...for me at top is:
PS
MH
then IR/WDTWA/Burn
Fireball/NW/Infinite/Purpendicular
Shades/CTTB
BOT/TBRO/Abandon
HOBL/Bananas/S&M
DP
Crapture and Stormbinger
the current album is the MK Morse album i enjoy the most, probably because its IMHO SMs best and most imaginative DP album where the Widdly Widdly stuff is all but banished and replaced by imaginative and at times emotional work, prime example being the outro on Birds Of Prey, i don't think it rates anywhere close to the top DP albums of all time though?I don't think PS is one of the greatest DP albums either ?it was a very good return for sure but one of the greatest and above IR and BURN???no not IMHO

Re:
I have to say that IMHO Burn must be the most overrated DP album in their catalog. It´s great album, but it´s mainly because of three songs (Burn, Mistreated and Might Just Take Your Live), otherwise it also contains some of the weakest studio material DP ever done (Lay Down Stay Down is prime example of cliché crap - probably the worst song of whole 68-76 era, You Fool No One is IMO very boring filler and even Paice´s drumming cant save it). It´s album of three great songs and overall overrated record - it doesnt deserve "cult" status it still has - it´s definately NOT on the same level as "golden trinity".

If you think about it, MJTYL isn't that great either except for JL's solo at the end.
On the contrary, I do find YFNO exciting, especially the live renditions.
A200 ain't too bad either, it anchors the album with its Bolero rhythm and splendid solos pretty well.
The rest is just filler/average stuff.

OMG...You guys should be thrown to the crocodiles!
Burn is great from the first to the last note. Even "What's goin on here" (which is the closest thing to a filler) has a great groove and great soloing.
What musicianship on this album, and the mix of Hughes and Coverdale have never been bettered by any duo in the history of Rock.
Burn, Lay Down, Sail Away, You Fool, Mistreated, A 200...All essentials tracks for me!

Yes, Burn really has no bad tracks on it. It's a fantastic album, it has some great hard rock elements, but also some more bluesy stuff on it. That's the direction Ritchie wanted to go into, that's why Gillan had to leave to find a singer, who could sing the blues properly.

Re: Infinite - the shortest Mark Morse album
I must admit, I didn't buy Burn until 1995. Except from the title track, You fool no one and Mistreated I still don't like the album very much. It's just not Deep Purple for me. Maybe because I was a huge fan of MK2 in the early seventies. I have the same problem with MK3 as others have with MK7 and 8.On the other hand: Compared to Stormbringer Burn is a fantastic album ...

Re: Infinite - the shortest Mark Morse album
BURN suffers from the same problem that plagues MACHINE HEAD, poor production. It's full of great songs, but it sounds lifeless, dry, and lacks bottom-end. Fortunately, the material came too life on stage. I still listen to BURN regularly, though. There's not a bad song on it, even the much maligned "A 200" sounds wonderful to my ears. It closes the album in perfect proggy-hard rock fashion and has some of the most incredible atmosphere and musicianship in the Deep Purple catalog, which is saying a lot.

Correct me if I´m wrong.... isnt it Gillan who sang the best blues DP song ever - When A Blind Man Cries??? "Learning" Gillan to sing blues is like learning shark to swim in ocean.
BTW - I recently listened to CTTB and suprisingly found out that I like it much more than Mk3 albums - highly underrated record with some really stunning stuff...

Well, obviously for Ritchie Gillan wasn't the right guy to sing the blues. ;-) He hated the song Blind Man Cries.
