Camera footage of 2004 DVD

The Still of the Night DVD remains one of the greatest rock DVD's I've ever seen and heard but there is a lot of speculation about how much additional work was carried out on the audio... these segments (I assume this is from one of the cameras on the night) answers some of those questions.

of the Night footage vol 1

Back then David was getting stick for his performances but in my opinion DC's vocals are very close to the final product. He was pretty good back then!!!

Re: Camera footage of 2004 DVD

I've got this footage on VHS, but the quality of the picture isn't this good and is almoste black and white. I think I got it in 2005, before the offical release. I was struck by the energy of the band and especially David back than.
But I've always thought this energy was not saved and transferred to the official video where David's voice sounds too much separated from the sound of the band. On this footage, everything seems more natural. The same problem, and even more, is with Made in Japan and, according to the promo clips, with the forthcoming DVD. I don't know why the producers and engineers do this.

I watched some of this last night. And although it's hard to hear him at times, DC doesn't sound too bad at all. I'm quite struck by the energy levels all round in these clips- by that I mean the band AND the audience are right up for it. I think you have to remember that back in 2003-2004, there was a real feeling of joy at having WS back and touring- here in the UK DC had only really toured twice in the 13 years preceding WS getting back together in 2003.

It's also good to see some of DC's banter with the audience, much of which was cut from the DVD. And the a capella version of Only My Soul is superb. Certainly on this, you can here that DC very much still had that wonderful tone and control when singing in the lower register.

I cant get over how much better David is here than in 1997, a different man.

David sounds OK here, but not really that good. Certainly not as bad as the stuff from fourteen years later, as you can hear from the Osaka recordings. Still harsher than I thought that he would sound after reading comments about how he sounded in 1997.

I could do without all the phallic stuff he does with the mic stand. It seems a bit creepy these days, really. emoticon I know that is his shtick, but it's still kind of sophomoric and belongs back in the 1980's. emoticon

don't think it really belonged in the 80s either? emoticon Though it was perhaps a bit easier to take when a guy in his late 20s and early thirties was doing that, but when hes in his 60s its bit wishful thinking emoticon it was ALWAYS a bit embarrassing along with some of the lyrics he wrote ,but that aside DC was one of the ultimate rock frontmen and had a truly wonderful voce back in the day.

I thought that it was goofy back then, too. I guess that it was part of the cock-rock hair band thing that was going on during that era. emoticon Some great tunes came out of that time, though. Today he looks like he is constipated and straining to push one out. Too bad. Along with Gillan, one of the great voices of rock reduced to a shadow of what it once was. emoticon
