Classic Rock Saved! Whitesnake No 6 in latest list!!!

Happy New Year everyone.

Well, Future got Classic Rock back so that brand continues (they sold it for 12 million and got it for less than a million. Good business.)

My latest issue arrived yesterday (a Teamrock edition) and it contains a list of the best 100 albums of the 80's.

Live in the Heart of the City is number 6.
1987 is not there at all.
Heaven and Hell is number 1.

That's all I have to say, except Heaven and Hell is the best album Rainbow never made.

51(!) pages devoted to their list of "real" greatest 1980s albums. Lazy, lazy journalism. They also break their rules, one of which is "Don't pick the most famous albums". Ok, let's pick Heaven and Hell then! It is unarguably one of the best 1980s albums, but not famous???

They also seem to have changed their tack on live reviews, doing 4 page features on a couple of live gigs instead of covering more gigs. This has been obvious in the last few issues. Considering this autumn and winter was the best period for live gigs I can remember it is really quite concerning that they can't be bothered getting out and reviewing the live "classic" rock scene.

I was a subscriber, but cancelled my direct debit with all the shenanigans going on. I'll not be renewing unless there is a marked improvement.

Can't disagree with any of this. It is a brand in decline unless they get to grips. I also cancelled my subscription so was surprised to get this in the post.

The articles they were posting on Facebook were total trash. The last issue of CR I bought was the Lemmy tribute issue...can't remember the last one I bought before that.

Re: Classic Rock Saved! Whitesnake No 6 in latest list!!!

I'd been subscribing to the magazine for 10 years or so but cancelled last January as I felt the quality had dipped so significantly. When I first started buying the magazine, I discovered a fair amount of new bands (or at least bands I'd previously never heard of) and music through reviews in CR. In latter years, I can barely think of a decent band or album I've bought as a result of reading about it in CR.

Admittedly, I did take a years subscription to Teamrock (as I'd just got an iPad) but can honestly say I barely accessed the website and had no intention of renewing that subscription.

I noticed a definite policy shift a few years ago when punk started to make major inroads into the magazine, probably to fill the hole left by decanting blues, Prog and AOR into separate magazines! Since then, I've found the magazine and the writing less and less interesting. However, I think there is hope with Future Publishing buying back the brand. My hope is that they'll forget about doing separate magazines for other genres of rock and concentrate on simply making Classic Rock a great magazine again.

As for Live in the Heart in the City being number 6 in the latest 'list', good on them for recognising it as a brilliant album. And for what it's worth, I love the Heaven and Hell album as well! Let's hope we have some new news from DC to talk about soon!

They've had a few good bands on the sampler CDs over the last year or so. I heard Purson on one sampler and have since bought everything they've released. They've just split up, which is a shame because I think they were the best British band in years.

I also heard a great track by H.E.A.T and bought the album (which is good, but not quite as excellent as Mannequin Show - the track on the sampler).

Generally though, I agree, there's precious little about new bands in the magazine content.

I'm wondering if the move to team rock coincided with the decline in quality. It mentions that this issue was ready to go pre the problems. I took advantage of the 3 issues for a fiver and I understand future are going to commit to outstanding subscriptions. If it improves & they offer a year sub's for £25 I may go for it.

Under Teamrock the quality definitely dropped. Too many daft lists, too much on the same bands covered (there is only so much Led Zep and Jimmy Page I want to read) and not enough on emerging talent. The Classic Rock awards are a nonsense as well...who's idea was it to go to Japan for gawds sake??

On the plus side I liked the fan packs (good idea).

The idea of Classic Rock covering blues and prog rock is an excellent one. Just one good, interesting magazine cover the genre is what's needed.

Do you think there's a Chance for a brand new studio album from David this year? I mean with brand new songs.
